MAPPA releases new artwork showing off several Yuri!!! On Ice characters at the 2022 Olympics. This 2016 anime follows Yuri Katsuki after a fumble during an ice-skating competition leaves him downtrodden. Victor Nikiforov, Russian ice-skating legend, eagerly offers to train Yuri. The series sees the pair bond as Yuri struggles with his self-confidence, and Victor learns how to coach on the job. Passionate fans have patiently waited for more of this anime after a movie and subsequent season 2 were announced, however, neither has been given a release date.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

This illustration posted on MAPPA’s Twitter places Yuri and Victor in an ice-skating rink with similar frosted mountain detailing to the one used for the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. Victor continues to act as Yuri’s coach in this image as the pair discuss something happening off-screen, while Victor holds Yuri’s arm across the barrier in a sweet nod to Victor and Yuri’s romantic relationship. Some other familiar faces pop up in the background, with Otabek getting in some practice while Yakov lectures an uninterested Yuri Plisetsky (Yurio). Check out the image below:

This is the second illustration posted in celebration of Yuri On Ice’s fifth broadcasting anniversary. The first image drop coincided with when the season 1 finale aired (late December 2016). In the finale, Yuri is seen in the same outfit, embracing cheers from adoring fans, suggesting that these two pieces are from the same day.

The sports anime has maintained a steady fan base despite having had no new content in six years. Yuri On Ice: Ice Adolescence last gave an update in 2020, saying that they’re still working on the Yuri On Ice movie despite its slow-going production. This long wait may be discouraging to some viewers, but the new collection of art tells fans that they’ve not given up on Yuri!!! On Ice.
