With Hugh Jackman said to be done playing Wolverine, a new bit of fan art casts Zac Efron in the role of the X-Men’s resident angry mutant. Sometimes the right role comes along that’s capable of vaulting an actor almost instantly into superstar status. In recent years, that’s become more and more common with roles in comic book properties. Aquaman looks to have turned Jason Momoa into a Hollywood A-lister, just as Captain America did for Chris Evans, Star-Lord did for Chris Pratt, Thor did for Chris Hemsworth, and Wonder Woman did for Gal Gadot.

A less recent example of one signature role setting an actor on the path to superstardom is Hugh Jackman landing the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s initial X-Men film. Jackman was mostly unknown outside of his native Australia at the time, but he took to playing the surly Canadian so well that to this day his remains one of the most praised superhero castings in history, and he’s gone on to become a huge movie star even outside of his work in the X-Men franchise. Sadly, despite the protests of Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds, Jackman seems intent on sticking to his promise that he’d never play Wolverine again after 2017’s Logan.

Disney’s big purchase of Fox’s film and TV assets is nearing completion in 2019, and at that point, it appears certain that the various X-Men and Fantastic Four characters will be recast and rebooted for eventual inclusion within Marvel Studios’ MCU franchise. It remains to be seen who will take over the Wolverine role, although John Wick star Keanu Reeves recently expressed interest in the job. In a new piece of fan art from the prolific BossLogic, a world is imagined in which Baywatch star Zac Efron is ultimately cast in the part. The art is striking, although it remains hard to envision Efron stepping into the shoes of Jackman, his co-star in last year’s hit The Greatest Showman.

Personal fan opinions concerning Efron’s past work aside, the biggest hurdle between him and playing Wolverine would likely be his size, or relative lack thereof. While Wolverine traditionally isn’t the tallest superhero, he’s very muscular, and Jackman was able to pack on the pounds of muscle needed to properly look the part. Efron certainly looked ripped in Baywatch, but in general, he’s not exactly beefy. That said, there’s certainly no guarantee he couldn’t get there if given the time and inclination to do so. Efron is also notably blessed/cursed with a perpetually youthful face, which might not fit Wolverine’s normally rugged characterization.

At the end of the day though, the chances of Efron getting cast as Wolverine are likely slim to none. In fact, considering a lot of past MCU castings, Marvel Studios might likely select a young actor yet to really break out for the role. After all, it’ll be hard for so many to accept anyone but Jackman playing Wolverine, and casting another known quantity with their own career baggage probably wouldn’t help things. For now though, all fans can do is wait and wonder, and use pieces of fan art like this to consider the possibilities.
