Zack Snyder comments on the allegations that Joss Whedon was abusive on the set of Justice League‘s reshoots. Back when Snyder served as one of the main architects of Warner Bros.’ DCEU, he was Justice League‘s original director. However, following a family tragedy, Snyder departed the project in the middle of production. Warner Bros. quickly brought in Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Whedon to complete the film, a move that was not approved by Snyder. Whedon’s finished cut of Justice League was drastically different than Snyder’s original plan, hence the release of the famed Snyder Cut on HBO Max later this week.

Last summer, Justice League star Ray Fisher came forward with allegations against Whedon, stating the director acted unprofessionally on the set of the film’s reshoots. This led to an internal investigation within Warner Bros. (which resulted in something called “remedial action”) and an outpouring of more accusations against Whedon. Several of those have stemmed from those who worked with Whedon on Buffy and Angel, though other Justice League stars have stood with Fisher in his commitment to seeing Whedon be held accountable for his actions.

Snyder recently spoke to the NYT about his long-awaited cut of Justice League. Inevitably, conversation turned briefly to Whedon and what occurred during the movie’s reshoots. Snyder was asked if he was aware of what was going on, to which he replied, “Not at the time.” However, he did share his support for the cast and crew. Snyder said:

The last thing they wanted to do was call me, complaining about them having a hard time shooting. But in retrospect, do I feel bad that they had to go through that? I do. These guys are my friends, and they’re amazing actors, and they’re strong people. I want them to be taken care of and in a healthy situation. I wasn’t there, so your opinion on it is probably is as good as mine.

It would make sense for Snyder to not be updated on the goings-on with the Justice League reshoots, particularly since he stepped away for his own mental health. Leaving the project must have already been a difficult situation for Snyder, and to learn his cast and crew suffered after he departed likely adds to the complicated swell of emotions surrounding the situation. Still, Snyder’s support for his Justice League family is commendable and reaffirms just why Fisher has stood by him all these years. He seems to genuinely care for those he works with, and that’s a special thing.

Snyder and those who worked on Justice League might finally get a sense of closure this week with the release of his completed cut. The famed Snyder Cut of Justice League will debut on HBO Max on Thursday, and the first reviews have already begun to roll out. This will be the film Snyder always intended to make before he departed, thus bringing the entire Justice League saga to a close. While the door is apparently left open for future follow-ups, it remains to be seen if Snyder will ever get to make another DC film. Nevertheless, fans will finally get to see his completed Justice League – free of Whedon’s influence – in just a few days.
