One of the most popular modern meme formats, the “woman yelling at cat” meme, has gotten The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword treatment, with Zelda taking the role of the woman and an in-game cat-like creature called a Remlit portraying the iconic Smudge the cat. The meme was shared to Reddit just ahead of the game’s HD remaster’s release on July 16th, 2021. Beyond being funny, it’s also a testament to how recognizable memes have become, even in altered states.

One of the new species of creature introduced in Skyward Sword is a small, cat-like creature known as a Remlit. If Link picks one of them up, it will follow him around until he enters a building. When thrown off the floating island hub of Skyloft into the sky, they’ll use their ears to fly back, effectively making them unharmable. They are adorable and docile during the day, but at night they transform into a more aggressive form, attacking Link if he ventures too close. There is a way to stop these nightly transformations with a sidequest.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The meme, created by a Reddit user, replaces Smudge the Cat from the “woman yelling at cat” meme with a nighttime Remlit. The woman is also subbed out, with Zelda appearing in her place. The confused onlooker is played by Link. Zelda and Link’s poses are from the beginning of Skyward Sword HD, when Zelda tells off Groose for insulting Link. One commenter did suggest that the daytime Remlit might have been a better fit. The creature’s nighttime appearance is a bit too angry to be a perfect match for Smudge, they argued. However, it seems that most have found the meme humorous enough as is. The post has received 155 upvotes at the time of this writing.

What is most impressive is how instantly recognizable the original meme still is, even in the context of screenshots from Skyward Sword. While many elements have been replaced, the original message still remains clear. It also still makes sense given the game’s and the original meme’s context. In both cases, the woman and the cat never directly interact with one another. Smudge was added by the meme’s creator, while Zelda is never seen on Skyloft at night.

Skyward Sword‘s remaster is giving one of the franchise’s most controversial titles a second chance in the spotlight. Early reviews of Skyward Sword HD are generally favorable, and fan reaction is mostly positive as well. Memes like these may also encourage others who missed the journey on the Wii to experience it now. Even if it’s not enough to convince them, it’s still a well-made and humorous tribute to the rejuvenation of a classic if controversial Zelda title.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
