WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Zendaya cried the whole time while watching Spider-Man: No Way Home. The former Shake It Up star is coming off one of the biggest years of her young career, as she began 2021 with a starring role in Sam Levinson’s two-hander, Malcom & Marie, opposite John David Washington. After that, the Emmy Award-winning actress for Euphoria voiced Lola Bunny in Space Jam: A New Legacy and appeared briefly in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, Dune, as Chani. If that wasn’t enough, Zendaya capped off the year with a bang with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Tom Holland’s third solo outing as the web-slinging superhero has been breaking numerous box office records since it debuted in theaters on December 17. No Way Home was not only the first film of the pandemic era to gross $1 billion, but was the second biggest domestic debut of all time behind Avengers: Endgame. With No Way Home set to enter its third weekend in theaters, Marvel and Sony are looking to keep audiences hooked on the latest Spider-Man movie as it continues to climb the list of the highest-grossing films of all time.

With No Way Home now playing in theaters, the cast has finally been able to let their guard down and air their honest thoughts on the film, including its morose ending, which sees everyone forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man, even those closest to him, MJ and Ned. Holland and Zendaya shared their thoughts on this bittersweet ending during a recent discussion with Marvel, though it wasn’t just the ending that struck an emotional chord with the MJ actress, as she “cried throughout the whole movie.” Read what the two had to say below:

Zendaya: I cried throughout the whole movie. And the first thing I said when we finished was, “This is awfully sad.”

Holland: It’s brutal. It’s tough. It’s bittersweet.

Zendaya: Is it though? Because it’s very much just bitter. Like I’m not getting the sweet part.

Zendaya is right to point out that the end of No Way Home is more bitter than sweet, considering all the loss Peter has suffered, including his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) being killed by Green Goblin’s (Willem Dafoe) glider and those closest to him forgetting he ever existed. There is a silver lining to it all though, as MJ and Ned get into their dream college of MIT and appear to be leading happy lives. The ending truly proves to be bittersweet when Peter attempts to reconnect with them, and he realizes that they will likely be better off without him.

Many fans can likely relate to Zendaya’s waterworks while watching No Way Home. Not only were there moments of despair, but many fans admit to shedding tears of nostalgia when both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire returned via Ned’s portals, or when Garfield’s Spider-Man saves MJ and remembers the death of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Spider-Man: No Way Home is an emotional rollercoaster, so hopefully Zendaya’s tears weren’t only out of sadness, but joy as well.
