Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Zendaya opens up about Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending, revealing how she would have preferred the latest MCU Spider-Man movie to end for MJ. Zendaya joined the MCU as a classmate and later love interest to Holland’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She reprises her role alongside Holland, Jacob Batalon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Marissa Tomei, joined by Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, and J.K. Simmons.

With the walls of reality breaking down and millions of individuals who know about the true identity of Spider-Man on the verge of spilling into the main universe of the MCU, Peter (Holland) is left with few choices to save the day. Telling Doctor Strange (Cumberbatch) to redo the spell that erased the world’s memories of Peter Parker to include everyone, including Ned (Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya), Peter lets his friends go, keeping them safe from his heroic life as they go to college. While No Way Home‘s ending is open to future stories, it is unclear how Peter’s friends could return, with Zendaya admitting she might hope things should have finished differently.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Speaking to Marvel.com alongside Holland for a spoiler-heavy discussion recorded weeks before the release of No Way Home, Zendaya and Holland were asked about how the film’s conclusion would impact fans given their own saddened reactions. Zendaya apologized, clarifying that she wanted to see Peter and MJ go off to college together. Holland agreed, before stating it was what it was before both realized younger fans would see the film’s emotional moments too, apologizing for the bitter-sweet experience. Check out the exchange below.

Zendaya: I’m sorry, I wanted Peter and MJ to go to college [together].

HollandI wanted them to have a happy ending. We’re still here, we’re feeling good. We’re proud of the movie. It would have been so nice for them to go to college, and just swing off into the sunset. Unfortunately, this is the way it is.

Zendaya: There’s going to be a lot of really upset little kids that are going to be like, [mimics wailing].

Holland: We may be teaching young kids a lesson they might not be ready for. But, [at least the movie’s] entertaining.

With Ned, MJ, and the rest of the MCU now having any recollection of Peter Parker, and Aunt May (Tomei) dying at the hands of Norman Osborn (Dafoe), Peter is truly alone. While this ending addresses the controversial and divisive close ties the MCU’s Peter has characters like Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) while bringing the character closer to his comic counterpart, it also enables a cleaner start should Sony and Marvel Studios part ways. Though both parties are confident that they will continue to work together on future Spider-Man films, there are no formal, solid agreements in place yet for any future MCU adventures.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home left Peter and MJ apart from one another, seemingly for good, there may still be hope for the couple. In the controversial comic story “One More Day “, which inspired the movie in some areas, Peter and Mary Jane were forced to give up their relationship to fix Peter’s life, but the pair would reunite eventually. If Zendaya were to return and Spider-Man was to remain in the MCU, perhaps the pair could reunite down the line, free of any threat.
