Zoë Kravitz, who plays Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in The Batman, reveals she drank milk from a bowl like a cat to prepare for the role. The Batman is co-written and directed by Matt Reeves, who previously directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Following numerous production delays due to the COVID pandemic, the film has finally released, giving audiences a grittier, more detective-oriented story for the Caped Crusader. The Batman sees the Riddler on a killing spree, taking out political figures in Gotham, which forces the Dark Knight down a path that exposes the city’s corruption and makes him to question his family’s involvement.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Robert Pattinson, who rose to fame with the Twilight franchise, dons the cowl as the titular Batman. Pattinson shares the screen with a stellar cast, featuring Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Kravitz as Catwoman. While many of the actors are already garnering praise for their portrayals in The Batman, Kravitz admits to taking unique steps to prepare for her role.

While promoting The Batman on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fallon told Kravitz what he would have done to prepare for a role like Catwoman. He jokingly said he would study cats, prompting Kravitz to say, “I did that.” Fallon then said, “I would drink milk out of a bowl,” with Kravitz quickly replying again, “I did that.” Her response left the host in disbelief, and Fallon quickly questioned it, to which Kravitz doubled down, saying, “I did.” Fallon again questioned her, asking, “You drank milk out of a bowl?” Kravitz then replied with a simple, “Maybe,” which spurred laughter from the audience and Fallon before she added, “I’m method, dude.”

The actress seemed genuine in her responses, allowing audiences a glimpse into Kravitz’s Catwoman preparation, though she’s far from the first actor to get ready for a role with in-depth character work. Daniel Day-Lewis may be the most infamous method actor, with many collaborators stating that he never breaks character for the entirety of production and going as far as to live without running water for 1996’s The Crucible, among other instances. Likewise, the cast of Saving Private Ryan underwent a seven-day military boot camp to prepare, and Christian Bale notoriously dropped 60 pounds prior to filming The Machinist, giving his character a hauntingly malnourished frame. Method preparation may not be anything new, but drinking milk from a bowl like a cat is certainly different when compared to some actors.

With Kravitz’s performance already being hailed by critics, it would seem as though her preparation was worth the effort, no matter how bizarre. As The Batman has received so much praise, Reeves has already been asked about plans for a sequel, meaning Kravitz could easily play Catwoman again down the road. For now, audiences have their first chance to see Kravitz in The Batman, where they can determine if her hard work paid off.
