Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest gave fans a lovable cast of hilarious characters who are all just trying to navigate the complexities of the gaming industry. From the overworked HR staff to the quarreling creative directors, there’s no shortage of office drama in this workplace comedy.

The best characters in the show have important roles, well-written lines, and sometimes, a fleshed-out backstory that makes it easy for fans to support them. In a TV series that often treads the line between humor and emotional conflicts, it’s not surprising that its best characters’ stories and motivations are rarely ever simple or straightforward.

10 Brendan

There are a ton of gaming references in Mythic Quest, with a common one being the several parodies and jokes about the live streaming niche. Pootie_Shoe is one of the young live streamers often ridiculed by the show because of his arrogance and mistreatment of his mother.

Pootie_Shoe turns out to be much more than a one-off side character, as it’s later revealed that the boy is actually Ian’s son, Brendan. His obsession with the game and attempt to hack it makes much more sense after fans learn about his complicated relationship with his father. He doesn’t really change after his failed attempt at hacking, however, and continues to be a thorn on the team’s side.

9 Jo

Jo initially joined the office as David’s bored assistant, who is often disappointed by the executive producer’s actions. Since she’s “attracted to power,” she ditches David to become Brad’s assistant instead, which proves to be a disastrous and short-lived arrangement when she eventually asks Ian to hire her.

Jo’s deadpan humor and tendency to be easily annoyed by everyone doesn’t exactly make her a fan favorite. Despite her lack of empathy and decency, she does try her best to be smart about her decisions, always making sure she learns from whoever she’s working for. She’s a cunning character who never wants to be caught next to the weakest person in the room.

8 Carol

As the head of the game studio’s Human Resources department, Carol has to put up with a lot of the team’s antics. From using her as a relationship counselor to complicating a simple personality test, the employees don’t make Carol’s job easy to do on a daily basis.

She’s like a classic sitcom side character who seems to be the only level-headed person in the room, often questioning what is wrong with everyone. Fans definitely feel bad for Carol, who just wants to do her tasks properly and punch out at 5 o’clock.

7 Rachel

Rachel is the overthinking analytical half of one of the best slow-burn romances on TV. The development of her relationship with Dana is an entertaining subplot on the show. The two testers get off to a slow start, in large part due to Rachel’s reluctance to make the first move.

Even though Rachel has a tough exterior and is outspoken about important issues, fans eventually learn that she’s more sensitive and emotional than she lets on. She constantly worries about what Dana thinks of her actions, which makes it especially satisfying to see the two of them together in the end.

6 David

David isn’t always the best at his job as the executive producer of Mythic Quest. He has a tendency to let his personal issues interfere with his work, often letting his emotions about his messy divorce seep into the workplace. Despite holding a high position in the office, David constantly searches for affirmation from his co-workers, especially from Jo, his ex-assistant. No one ever really takes him seriously because he’s considered to be a pushover who will go along with whatever Poppy and Ian want.

David often has to remind people that he’s the boss, which is not a good indicator of great leadership in the workplace. His redeeming quality is that he does usually have the team’s best interests at heart and will compromise his own position to defend their often outrageous actions to their corporate superiors.

5 Dana

Dana is one of two testers in the main cast and she develops a relationship with Rachel. She has big dreams that go way beyond just sitting on a couch and playing video games eight hours a day. She’s definitely more straightforward than Rachel and is courageous when it comes to being open about her romantic feelings.

Dana’s cool personality and unstoppable drive to pursue her dream to become a coder is admirable. She grabs every opportunity to improve herself, even if it means temporarily becoming Poppy’s personal assistant. She’s one of the more likable characters in the show who fans want to see succeed.

4 Brad

Viewers who miss Abed and Troy’s dynamic in Community are undoubtedly big fans of Brad in Mythic Quest. He’s the brilliant head of the monetization department, whose smart schemes ensure that the company remains profitable. At first glance, he seems to be a cold and calculating character who will go to extremes just to manipulate the people around him.

However, there’s a softer side to Brad who, although he would never admit it, actually deeply cares about the company and his co-workers. This is especially evident when he does everything he can to defend the game studio from his brother’s attempt at sabotage, even going so far as to get arrested for insider trading to save Jo. He’s a delightfully complex character who does everything for a good reason.

3 Ian

Ian is the egotistic and overconfident creator and director of Mythic Quest who would control everything down to the most minute details if he could have his way. He often gets into fights with his recently promoted co-creative director, Poppy, and the game’s executive director, David.

Despite being responsible for the birth of the game, Ian has little to no knowledge of basic coding elements. This leads him to demand unrealistic elements from his coders and artists. He needs Poppy to balance his creative approach, just like she needs him for his imaginative goals for the game. Ian starts out as someone who is closed off from the rest of the team but eventually learns to become more trusting and vulnerable. His unexpectedly emotional backstory and his close friendship with Poppy become a focal point in the later episodes of the show.

2 Poppy

Poppy is arguably the better half of the creative duo behind the success of Mythic Quest. Without her coding prowess, most of the innovative elements in the game would not have been possible. She’s more practical than Ian, which is usually an advantage.

However, without Ian’s creativity, Poppy is left with uninspired ideas that don’t really help their game improve. Both of them refuse to admit that they need one another, but in “Please Sign Here,” it’s shown that Poppy is willing to be the better person who is always supportive of Ian. She stays loyal to the company despite getting an offer from a major competitor because she understands that she needs the game studio team’s support and friendship, and they need her (especially Ian).

1 C.W.

C.W. is likely not the first character to come to mind when newer viewers see him in action in the first few episodes of the show. He has outdated views, drinks too much, and is often more annoying than helpful during important meetings.

Thanks to Mythic Quest’s brilliant narrative, however, the character is given the best story arc in the series. There are two entire episodes – “Backstory!” and “Peter” – dedicated to showing C.W. Longbottom’s complicated past. Most fans fall in love with Carl after they learn about his painful heartbreak and see his moving reunion with his friend. It’s an incredible way to highlight character growth and redeem someone who would have otherwise faded into the background.
