While fans of the MCU films might be aware of Peggy Carter, she was mostly a supporting character in those movies and didn’t have a lot of screen time. The character might not have been featured very much in the films, but she did get her own television show, Agent Carter, for a time. During this series, many more facts were revealed about the character. She also appeared in the comics over the years, and there are many facts about her that even Agent Carter fans might not realize.

10 PEGGY WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN SAVING ERSKINE FROM JOHANN SCHMIDT

Even before Peggy Carter made her first MCU appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger, she was involved with World War II and making waves. Audiences knew from that film that Margaret Elizabeth Carter was a member of the Strategic Scientific Reserve. What they didn’t get to see is that she was instrumental on a mission to Germany where she helped save Abraham Erskine from Johann Schmidt. This is how Erskine was able to join the SSR and help with the Super Soldier Serum.

9 SHE WAS FIRST INTRODUCED IN COMICS IN 1966

While she did show up in the MCU in the first Captain America movie, she was in the comics long before that. Her first appearance was in a Captain America comic called Tales of Suspense #75. This comic came out in 1966. This just shows that Peggy has been an MCU character for decades now. While the details of the character might be different in the comics in the MCU, there are some similarities.

For example, they both fall for Steve Rogers but that relationship is cut short when Steve goes into the ice.

In Agent Carter, fans got to see all of the amazing things that Peggy Carter was doing with her life after Steve. While her story in the MCU films basically stopped with The First Avenger, this television show filled in the gaps. This show followed her life after Steve went into the ice and showed even more how capable Peggy Carter was and how she changed the world by co-founding S.H.I.E.LD. Thankfully, this show exists given that her only other real appearance in the MCU was as an old woman in Captain America: Civil War.

7 SHE HELPED HOWARD STARK CLEAR HIS NAME

In The First Avenger, we see that Howard Stark and Peggy Carter know each other and are working with the SSR. After the war, however, Howard Stark came under fire and was accused of selling weapons to enemies of the United States. Peggy Carter was instrumental in helping to clear his name and make it known that he wasn’t actually a traitor. This moment is just one example of how Peggy’s actions helped shape the future of many MCU characters.

6 SHE BECAME DIRECTOR OF S.H.I.E.L.D. IN 1970

MCU fans are aware that Peggy Carter helped found S.H.I.E.L.D. and also became the director. While she helped found the organization with Howard Stark, she officially became the director of the entire agency in the year 1970 when she was almost 50 years old.

This occurred simultaneously with her having two children. Peggy was definitely a person that did a lot with her life and have both family and an amazingly successful career.

5 SHE WAS BORN IN 1921 IN HAMPSTEAD, ENGLAND

It’s clear in the MCU that Peggy is from England, but we don’t learn much else about her and her background. However, some of these details are revealed in the Agent Carter television series. For example, she was born on April 9 in 1921 in Hampstead, England. She also went to school at a place called St. Martin-In-The-Fields High School for Girls. She also had an older brother named Michael that she was close to and spent a lot of time with during her childhood.

4 PEGGY DATED AND WAS ASSUMED TO HAVE MARRIED A MAN NAMED DANIEL SOUSA

While in Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers goes back in time in order to marry Peggy Carter, it was originally Daniel Sousa in Agent Carter who was set up to be her husband. While they didn’t get married on the show since it got canceled, the two started a serious relationship. Sousa was a soldier from World War II who lost one of his legs in the war. He also became an agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve which is how he met Peggy.

3 IN THE COMICS, SHE WAS THE LEADER OF AN UNDERGROUND FRENCH RESISTANCE.

While in the MCU she is a member of the SSR and from England, her comics origins are different. In her introduction in Marvel Comics, she is actually a leader of an underground movement of French people fighting against the Nazis. Captain America meets her there and falls in love with her bravery and leadership. Later, she gets taken captive by Nazis and Captain America saves her.

It’s no wonder Steve fell in love with someone who was so selflessly willing to put their life on the line to help other people.

2 SHE ALSO BECAME A COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER FOR THE AVENGERS IN THE COMICS

In the comics version, Peggy also eventually becomes part of the Avengers in a way. While she’s not exactly an Avenger, she does do work for them as a Communications Officer. This meant she spent a lot of time living at their headquarters and even helped defend the headquarters from different enemies including the likes of Dr. Doom.

1 SHE HAD A STATUE PUT UP IN HER HONOR IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY

Also in the comics, Peggy lives a long, full life and ends up passing away in old age. At her funeral, her niece Sharon, Steve Rogers, Dum Dum Dugan, and Nick Fury are there. There is also a statue that is put up to honor and celebrate her life. This statue is placed outside of S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy in Newark, New Jersey.
