Back in 2017, Sony Pictures TV decided to reintroduce viewers to the 1970s popular sitcom, One Day At a Time. This time, the show came with a Latin twist and the cast included Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Marcel Ruiz, Isabella Gomez, Rita Moreno, and Stephen Tobolowsky, among others.

The series made viewers laugh and cry as Machado’s Penelope Alvarez portrayed a single mother struggling to make ends meet while raising children amidst a backdrop of several real-life issues. Throughout its run, the show tackled topics around mental health, immigration, LGBTQ+ rights and many others. Unfortunately, One Day At a Time came to an abrupt end in 2020 after the pandemic prevented the show from resuming production. Here’s what the cast has been up to since then.

10 James Martinez

The Hulu series revolves around the titular character Victor Salazar (Michael Cimino), a high school student who is trying to discover his true self while also trying to adjust to living in a new city. It’s also set in the same universe where the popular teen comedy, Love, Simon, takes place.

On the show, Martinez stars as Armando Salazar, Victor’s father. Of the role, the actor told The Sarah Scoop Show, “I felt it was very refreshing to see parents onscreen that really don’t have it figured out. They have a lot of learning to do.”

9 Eric Nenninger

Nenninger joined The Flash as Joseph Carver, the CEO of McCulloch Technologies, leader of the Black Hole and the show’s villain, at one point. Joseph died after his own wife, Eva (Efrat Dor), mortally wounded him with a shard of glass from a mirror.

Before he succumbed to his injuries, however, Joseph managed to reveal to Eva that she was a mirror duplicate of the real Eva. Following this revelation, showrunner Eric Wallace told TV Line that Eva would “act out in the worst way possible.”

8 India De Beaufort

After appearing in One Day At a Time and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, de Beaufort is set to star in the upcoming Netflix movie, Slumberland, which is inspired by a comic strip written by Winsor McCay. Aside from de Beaufort, the cast also includes Jason Momoa, Chris O’Dowd, Kyle Chandler, Weruche Opia and the young actress, Marlow Barkley.

The film tells the story of a young girl (Barkley) who discovers a map to a dreamworld called Slumberland. Here, she meets an outlaw (Momoa) who helps her find her way around. De Beaufort will reportedly play the counselor at the girl’s school.

7 Ed Quinn

In the Tyler Perry political drama, The Oval, Quinn plays Hunter Franklin, the newly elected U.S. president whose family just moved into the White House.

For Quinn, he felt the need to make the character more interesting the moment he got the part: “When I got the initial breakdown, he was very dark, kind of one-note,” the actor explained while speaking with Starry Constellation Magazine. “But then when Tyler [Perry] hired me, I felt like he was doing that because he wanted me to give the character a bit of life.”

6 Haneefah Wood

In The Goldbergs spinoff series, Schooled, Wood played Wilma Howell, a very passionate teacher who was poached from an elite school to join the teaching staff at William Penn. At school, Wilma teaches science, although she has no problems stepping in for her co-workers when necessary.

Unfortunately, ABC decided to cancel the comedy after just one season. Nonetheless, Wood recently reprised her character during one episode of The Goldbergs, which revolved around a murder mystery party. At the moment, it is unclear if Wood will ever appear on the hit family sitcom again, but here’s hoping that she will.

5 Stephen Tobolowsky

The entire time Tobolowsky played one of the main characters on One Day At a Time, he was also busy with The Goldbergs. Here, he plays Earl Garry Ball, the principal of William Penn Academy.

At the moment, it is unclear if ABC plans to renew The Goldbergs for a ninth season, but fans can also expect to see Tobolowsky in the upcoming film Stay@Home. In addition, the veteran actor has also been attached to the upcoming biographical drama Butterfly in the Typewriter. Susan Sarandon and Diane Kruger are also reportedly set to star in the movie.

4 Rita Moreno

History has shown that movie musicals tend to do well in the awards circuit and there are certainly high hopes that the upcoming film adaptation of the West Side Story will do just as well. For Moreno, the project is particularly special because she previously played Anita in the 1961 West Side Story movie.

And although the cast was led by the late Natalie Wood, Moreno received critical acclaim for her performance and even won an Oscar for Best-Supporting Actress. In the upcoming movie, Moreno will play a newly created character named Valentina.

3 Isabella Gomez

The Colombian-born actress once revealed that “auditions dwindled and people don’t want to see me as much,” after she appeared on One Day At a Time. While participating at the NALIP Diverse Women In Media panel, the actress revealed that it was because people found out she was Latina after being cast on the show. “It’s interesting because I am white-passing. So, when I got here people didn’t know I was Latina.”

Fortunately, Gomez eventually found a new project, specifically the recently released film, Initiation. The slasher film centers around a university whose star athlete is murdered during its pledge week. Gomez plays one of the school’s sorority girls.

2 Todd Grinnell

The veteran actor stars in the recently released movie, Paradise Cove, alongside Mena Suvari and Kristin Bauer van Straten. In the movie, Grinnell stars as a contractor looking to flip his mother’s house, only for him and his wife (Suvari) to be terrorized by a woman (van Straten) who is living under the home.

And although the film is a thriller, Grinnell revealed that the mood was more lighthearted behind the scenes. While speaking with Starry Constellation Magazine, Grinnell recalled, “Mena and I had a lot of laughs whenever we shot the scenes in bed …”

1 Justina Machado

After portraying a single mother and veteran in One Day At a Time, Machado took on a film project that brings together some of Hollywood’s most famous names today.

The upcoming anthology film, With/In, is a collaboration between various actors that was done during the recent pandemic lockdown. The collection of short films features stars such as Machado, Rosie Perez, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, Carla Gugino, Adrianne Palicki, and many others. Machado stars in the segment called “Coco and Gigi,” alongside Perez, who also wrote and directed the segment.
