Mickey Guyton is an American country music singer who performed during the American Idol season 19 finale. Born in Arlington, Texas, she first found an interest in music at the age of five. According to her official website, she started singing in church and was influenced by singers like Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston. Eventually, the Texas native went on to sign with Capitol Records Nashville.

Candace Mycale Guyton sang the night Chayce Beckham won American Idol. She performed her single, “Black Like Me,” with former contestant Alyssa Wray. In a powerful two minutes, the two dominated the stage with their strong vocals, amazing stage presence, and sparkly gowns. But before she graced the stage as a guest singer, she was an American Idol competitor. During season five, Mickey auditioned for the show. While her appearance was not televised, she made it to the top fifty.

Mickey’s debut single was “Better Than You Left Me,” which was released in 2015. Billboard Magazine has called her one of country music’s female game changers and Entertainment Weekend labeled her one of the new queens of country music. During 2019’s ACM Awards, Mickey performed “I’m Standing With You” from the Breakthrough movie soundtrack alongside Chrissy Metz, Lauren Alaina, Maddie & Tae, and season 4 winner Carrie Underwood. The movie album also featured her song “Hold On,” which she wrote with Karen Kosowski and Victoria Banks. She was featured on CBS This Morning twice and also sang on Good Morning America and The Today Show.

In 2020, Mickey became the 12th former American Idol contestant to be nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance for “Black Like Me.” She also became the first Grammy nominee who was eliminated before the American Idollive shows, and the first black woman to be nominated in that category. She was additionally the first black woman to achieve a number one hit on the Canada Country music chart for “Boys,” which she sang with Dean Brody. She was previously nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award for new female vocalist in 2016, and received another nomination in 2021 for new female artist. 

As far as her personal life, Mickey began a relationship with Grant Savoy in 2010. The couple wed in 2017 and, since then, have given birth to a son named Grayson. In May 2021, Mickey was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The piece features one of her dresses and trivia on her life saying, “I was trying to write everybody else’s song and everybody else’s story when I had a unique story of my own.”
