Creator of The Bachelor Mike Fleiss tweeted Saturday about an announcement that will be historic that is apparently coming soon. He did not provide any more details, leaving fans to speculate about what he possibly could have meant with his Saturday afternoon social media post.

This season of The Bachelor has been rather unremarkable thus far. The drama had centered around Shanae for most of the season, but she was recently eliminated on a 2-on-1. Clayton Echard, who Mike once promised fans would be happy with, appears to be head-over-heels for front-runner Rachel, and there are a few others, like Susie and Sarah, that he is genuinely interested in as well. It would be early for the show to make an announcement about who the next lead of The Bachelorette would be, although it wouldn’t be totally out of character for the show to make such an announcement before the season is over. Clayton currently has at least another week before hometowns, so it would seem there are plenty of potential candidates who are still in the competition for Clayton’s final rose.

Fleiss tweeted Saturday, “Historic announcement coming soon! #TheBachelor”. This comes five days after Fleiss quote tweeted Joe Amabile’s tweet, “Maybe they’ll make Shanae The Bachelorette #Bachelor” with “Hmmmmm”. If that’s the direction the show has decided to go, it would be historic, since no one with such a significant villain edit has been named the lead of the show. It would be a terrible move for Mike, however, since not only was Shanae extremely unlikeable on this season, but she also mocked mental health.

If the “historic announcement” is related to the choice of The Bachelorette, perhaps it means the show has decided to cast someone like Demi Burnett, who is bisexual. This would allow the franchise its first chance to have a sexually fluid lead with a cast that is not only comprised of women or men. One fan also wondered if this announcement was tied to the show finally living up to its promise of a senior Bachelor, with an older cast. The show also toyed with the idea of having two Bachelors this year, with Blake Moynes potentially in the running to follow Clayton. That idea was reportedly scrapped, but maybe the show has decided to revisit that plan.

Fleiss seems to be excited about this announcement, but forgive some of Bachelor Nation if they are dreading what the news will be. The franchise has been woefully inept in casting seasons and spin-offs that reflect the diversity of the real world. The conceit of The Bachelor is so transparently manufactured that even a season that celebrates increased representation could wind up being bad. One thing’s for sure: everyone was enjoying their weekend, blissfully not thinking about The Bachelor, before Fleiss had to hop on Twitter and ruin the vibe. Hopefully, the anticipation will be worth it. Most likely, it won’t.

The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8pm EST on ABC.
