Here’s who provides the incredible singing voice for Freddie Mercury on season 1 of Big Mouth, and it’s definitely not Jordan Peele. Big Mouth is a Netflix original comedy that mostly revolves around Nick and Andrew – in addition to their family and friends – two awkward teenagers who are experiencing the trials and tribulations of puberty. Nick is voiced by the show’s co-creator Nick Kroll, who based much of the series around his own teen years. The boys are also followed around by hormone monsters, which are quite literal manifestations of their own raging hormones.

Big Mouth has run for four seasons and counting and has often received raves for its all-star cast – which includes the voices of John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph – and comic writing. Among the show’s ability to craft some truly expert gross-out gags, but there’s also a lot of heart and warmth to it. Season 4 landed on Netflix in late 2020, with Big Mouth already renewed for a further two seasons; a spinoff titled Human Resources is also in the works.

Another recurring voice actor on the show is comedian and director Jordan Peele (Get Out). The best known Jordan Peele Big Mouth character is Duke Ellington, a real-life jazz musician whose ghost lives in Nick’s attic and often offers the boys advice. Peele has voiced other ghosts on the series too, including Burt Reynolds, Tyler Perry and Freddie Mercury. The latter has appeared in ghost form a couple of times, including season 1’s “Am I Gay?” This episode sees Andrew questioning his sexuality due to an erotically charged trailer for an action movie starring Dwayne Johnson, leading to Freddie offering guidance in the form of a song titled “Totally Gay.”

Not only is Big Mouth’s “Totally Gay” song impossibly catchy, but the singer offers an incredible impression of Freddie Mercury too. While Peele is no doubt a decent singer, capturing that unique Mercury singing voice is a little out of his range – or most singers, for that matter. Instead, the singing vocals belong to McKian – AKA Brendan McCreary – a musical artist and brother of famed composer Bear McCreary (Godzilla: King Of The Monsters).

The singer was a huge fan of Freddie Mercury, and the song itself is so good it went on to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. McKian’s singing voice perfectly captures the vibe of a Queen song, and it would establish Big Mouth’s skill for producing great original songs.
