Black Adam star Sarah Shahi opens up with new details regarding the costume for her character Adrianna Tomaz, better known as Isis. Shahi stars in the film alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular DC Comics anithero, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher. Exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps but the film is expected to explore the origins of Black Adam as he breaks free from his imprisonment after 5,000 years for abusing his powers.

Development for Black Adam has been in the works for nearly 15 years after Johnson originally expressed interest in starring as the character in a Shazam film. This was put on hold for a few years but would eventually kick back up as Warner Bros. began putting together plans for its DC Extended Universe in 2014, with Johnson officially signing on to portray Black Adam and the studio electing to split him off into a solo film to allow him and Shazam proper time to be introduced before facing off. Production finally got underway on Black Adam in April 2021 and reportedly wrapped in August, with Johnson having wrapped his work the prior month.

Shahi recently spoke with Palm Springs Life to discuss her new and upcoming projects, including Black Adam. In discussing the costume for her freedom fighter heroine, the actress kept mum on whether her goddess alter ego would don the same clothing as her comic book counterpart but did offer a tease of what she will wear for the majority of the film. See what Shahi said below:

“My character lives in this fictional Middle Eastern desert world, so I was wearing utility boots, cargo pants, tank tops, and motorcycle jackets when I needed to get a little rough. It was earthy and comfortable.”

The lack of confirmation on whether Isis’ iconic costume will appear in Black Adam won’t come as a surprise to many, namely as the goddess’ inclusion was only technically confirmed by Shahi posting on social media about her role as Adrianna, the heroine’s alter ego in the comics. Additionally, with the film looking to explore the antihero side of Black Adam versus a villainous one, the story appears to be pulling from the 52 iteration of Isis in which the villainous group Intergang attempt to enslave and gift her to Black Adam, only for him to free her and find his view of the world changed by numerous discussions with her. She would subsequently be instilled with powers after Adam gifted her the Amulet of Isis, allowing her to transform into the goddess.

Should Black Adam being taking this approach, the likelihood of some deviations is high given Shazam had to imbue the Amulet of Isis with powers for Adrianna to use it as such. With neither Shazam! star Zachary Levi or Johnson confirming or hinting at an appearance from either in their upcoming films, the amulet will likely find its power source elsewhere unless a surprise post-credits sequence sees the two share the screen. Only time will tell when Black Adam arrives in theaters on July 29, 2022.
