Bob Odenkirk’s vocal performance as Incredibles 2’s Winston Deavor was so wholesome it turned the character from a villain to a hero. The Incredibles series revolves around the Parrs, a family of superheroes who are forced to repress their abilities when heroes are outlawed. Both entries were helmed by Brad Bird, who brought his trademark skill with inventive action setpieces, but they’re also characterized by their warmth and humor. The Incredibles characters also have abilities mirroring those of the Fantastic Four, with the movies often considered more faithful adaptations of that comic than their actual movie counterparts.

Fans had a long wait for Incredibles 2, which arrived over thirteen years after the original. This installment saw Helen – AKA Elastigirl – recruited for secret missions by Winston and Evelyn Deavor, who are voiced by Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener respectively. The Deavor’s run DevTech, who want to head a campaign that will help make Supers legal again, with the two having a personal connection to the cause. With Elastigirl out fighting crime, it’s left to Bob to look after the children and be a parent – which is something he initially struggles with. Incredibles 2 was a huge success, though its reviews weren’t as warm as the first movie.

In the last decade, Bob Odenkirk has been given a chance to shine with the role of sleazy attorney Saul Goodman – AKA Jimmy McGill – on Breaking Bad and spinoff Better Call Saul. The latter show in particular gave Odenkirk a chance to play the many layers of the title character, with Saul being nothing if not a great showman. Odenkirk brought that energy to Winston Deavor, whose utter sincerity in wanting to bring back Supers feels like it’s hiding some kind of hidden or villainous agenda.

In a lovely case of subversion, Incredibles 2 reveals Winston is the upstanding guy he’s portrayed to be, though his sister Evelyn is revealed to be the true villain Screenslaver. Evelyn wants Supers to remain outlawed as she blames them for failing to help her and Winston’s father, who called upon Supers during a home invasion but was murdered before help arrived. This wasn’t the initial plan, as Winston was also going to be revealed as a bad guy out for profit.

An earlier version of Incredibles 2 revealed Winston and his brother Nelson – who was replaced by Evelyn during production – were in cahoots. It turns out Bob Odenkirk’s’ winning sincerity and optimism whilst doing recording sessions for Winston led to Brad Bird reworking his character. The actor himself was glad of the change, as he revealed during an interview with IndieWire. While a third movie is possible there are currently no plans for one, but if it does come to pass maybe Winston will still be involved.
