New storyboard art for the upcoming animated Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff series I Am Groot shows off a funny scene between the titular character and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). I Am Groot was first announced in December of 2020 during Disney’s virtual Investor’s Day presentation. The series will be helmed by MCU newcomer Kirsten Lepore, with Guardians writer/director James Gunn attached as an executive producer. While exact plot details are unknown, I Am Groot is confirmed to be a series of photorealistic short films that may depict Groot returning to his homeworld of Planet X. The series will release on Disney+ sometime in 2022 as part of Phase 4 of the MCU.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Groot first made his way into the MCU with the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film in 2014. Although he initially appears as a hulking, sentient tree-organism, Groot’s touching sacrifice during the film’s climax causes him to be reborn. Since then, each new appearance of the character has depicted him in a later stage of his life cycle; most recently, Groot appeared in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame in an adolescent form. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that I Am Groot would follow the popular Baby Groot, hinting that the series will take place earlier in the MCU timeline.

Now, new storyboard art for I Am Groot from artist Mark Hurtado depicts what appears to be a comedic beat between Baby Groot and Drax. The brief scene shows Baby Groot snatching a mobile gaming console away from a distracted Drax with his tentacle-like root appendages. This represents the strongest indication yet that at least some of Groot’s fellow Guardians will be joining the series. Check out the full images below:

Although a cast list has yet to be announced for the show, Groot voice actor Vin Diesel has shared that he has had conversations about the series with Feige, possibly hinting at his involvement. Now, with Drax’s return seemingly confirmed, it’s unclear whether Bautista will return to reprise his role, or if a separate voice actor will cover the part, as was often the case in Marvel’s What If…?. Given Bautista’s volatile relationship with Disney, both outcomes are equally likely at this point.

Drax’s appearance in Hurtado’s storyboard art sets a precedent for other members of the Guardians team to make an appearance as well. Rocket Raccoon would be another seamless addition, given that he and Groot are the only two fully CGI characters in the Guardians team line-up, though roping in Bradley Cooper could prove difficult. Ultimately, it’s unclear whether the characters’ original actors will return, and hopefully these questions will be answered as details about I Am Groot continue to emerge.
