Robert Rodriguez is already hard at work filming his next movie, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, shifting once again from violent and bloody action films (Machete) to the world of kid-friendly adventure.

Some new photos from the set of Spy Kids 4 have hit the Net and they give us our first look at Jessica Alba, who joined the cast back in August. Alba is playing a retired spy named Marissa Cortez Wilson who has been “reactivated” and, along with her two kids, has to face off against the villainous Timekeeper who wants to take over the world (check out the full synopsis if you haven’t already).

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Starring alongside Alba in Spy Kids 4 are the likes of Jeremy Piven as the Timekeeper, Joel McHale as Alba’s unknowing husband and Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook as the new titular Spy Kids. Also starring are some familiar faces from the franchise, such as Antonio Banderas and the original Spy Kids, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara (it’s unknown if Carla Gugino, the mother in the first three films, will return).

As you’ll see from these set pics, Alba won’t exactly be an eyesore:

Not much to see for the time being but at least we know that Alba will be suitably dressed to kick some PG butt 😛 . The pics also confirm that the previous Spy Kids, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, will be making appearances – although I imagine they will just be extended cameos as the focus will be on the new Kids.

Even though the notion of Alba playing a retired spy is hard to believe (she’s not even 30 yet!), it wasn’t really a surprise she was cast in Spy Kids 4. She has collaborated twice with Rodriguez – first on Sin City (in what is probably her best role to date) and then on this year’s Machete. However, this will be the first time she’ll star in one of Rodriguez’s kid-friendly films, so we’ll have to wait and see how that collaboration turns out.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Spy Kids 4 will be in 3D, the third film was and really, by now it’s only news if a movie ISN’T going to be in that format. Unfortunately the film won’t be filmed in 3D but will instead receive the inferior post-conversion 3D treatment (groan…).

Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World is already filming in Austin, Texas and is scheduled to hit theaters in 3D on August 19th, 2011.
