OnePlus is reportedly working on bringing a folding smartphone to the market this year, but it might not be an entirely new product. Folding phones have gotten increasingly more popular over the years, thanks largely to devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as Huawei’s Mate X2. Other notable folding devices, like the Oppo Find N, have also been launched over the past year, while many more, like the Vivo X Fold and the Huawei Mate X3, are said to be in the pipeline.

Google is also said to be working on a so-called Pixel Fold, while rumors about a folding iPhone have also been circulating for years. Then there’s the second-generation Moto Razr folding smartphone that rumors suggest could release this year. The latest report now reinforces earlier rumors that OnePlus is also almost certainly getting ready to join the folding bandwagon.

A new report from Pricebaba claims that OnePlus is working on a folding phone, citing prolific tipster Yogesh Brar as the source of the information. The report also says that the upcoming device will be based on the Oppo Find N that was launched last December in China. Unfortunately for would-be buyers, there’s no specific information about its release date, pricing, or availability right now. The fact it will be a OnePlus branded phone, however, probably suggests it will have wider availability than the Oppo device.

A Rebranded Oppo Find N?

There’s no word on the rumored OnePlus phone’s specifications, but if it is a carbon copy of the Oppo Find N, it might disappoint on at least one count. The Find N ships with the Snapdragon 888, which was Qualcomm’s last-generation flagship SoC. The chip has since been superseded by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and is likely to be made further obsolete by the release of the newer and faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, which is rumored to launch this June. While OnePlus’ plans are not yet known, buyers might expect the company to at least equip its first foldable with the new chipset, even if the rest of the device remains identical to the Oppo Find N.

If the report is correct and the OnePlus device does turn out to be nothing more than a rebranded Oppo Find N, it will still come with premium hardware, the older processor notwithstanding. The Oppo Find N’s hardware specifications include a 7.1-inch 1920 x 1792 folding AMOLED LTPO panel alongside a 5.49-inch 1972 x 988 AMOLED cover display. It also sports a triple camera setup on the outside, led by a 50-megapixel sensor, while both the inner and outer displays have their own 32-megapixel selfie-cameras. The Find N also comes with a 4,500mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging and runs Android 12 out of the box, suggesting the first OnePlus foldable phone might as well.
