Fortnite’s newest event takes players through time, though not in the way they may be accustomed to. Early on August 26, Fortnite announced a collaboration with TIME to create March Through Time, an in-game event that brings players to a reimagined version of Washington D.C. in 1963, dubbed D.C. 63. Players can explore the National Mall while Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech plays in the background. The Fortnite MLK event also includes an in-game museum and gives players the opportunity to play several minigames and unlock a commemorative in-game spray.

Fortnite is well known for its many collaborations, including a recently announced Magic: The Gathering set. These can range from in-game events and skins, such as its partnerships with DC, Marvel and the NBA, to epic, one-time events, such as Travis Scott’s in-game concert. During its brief run, there were even Quibi shows on Fortnite‘s in-game drive in-screen.

March Through Time marks the first occasion Fortnite has done something of a more serious and educational nature, and it comes at a time when many states are debating how civil rights and race issues should be taught in schools. To begin the event, all players have to do is enter the lobby and change the Fortnite game mode to March Through Time, and they’ll be dropped into D.C. 63. They then have 20 minutes to complete all missions and unlock the March Through Time reward.

Fortnite’s March Through Time MLK Event Missions & Rewards

There are 10 minigames in Fortnite’s March Through Time, all designed around the idea that “we move forward when we work together,” according to TIME Studios. The following games are located around the National Mall:

  • Stacking
  • Falling Through Time
  • Library
  • Duo Puzzle
  • Gravity Game
  • Maze
  • Climb the Mountain
  • Pillars of Justice
  • Relay Race
  • Museum

True to their purpose, most of these Fortnite minigames are impossible to complete without at least one other player. Some, such as Climb the Mountain, can be accomplished alone, but it will be a much slower and more difficult task.

Each game rewards players with a light upon completion, which must then be used to light pillars around the National Mall. Once all the pillars are lit, the March Through Time quests are considered done, and players receive a special D.C. 63 locker spray. Additionally, players who enter the event will receive special Fortnite emotes, including a thumbs-up, rainbow, and protest sign, though it’s unclear if these will be accessible in standard gameplay. Fortnite’s March Through Time event will be available for players to experience and play through for one year.
