Sookie St. James always had a perfect arc on Gilmore Girls. In the first season, she was a single chef who loved her work and was more or less fine with not having a special someone, even though she wasn’t opposed to the idea. She enjoyed hanging out with her best friend Lorelai and she was always happy to give Rory treats when she visited the Independence Inn after school.

Sookie wasn’t a whiz at business but she loved cooking and sharing her food with people. When fans got the chance to catch up with her in the Netflix revival A Year In The Life, viewers noticed some key differences, but there were also some positive additions to this character’s story.

10 Hate: Wasn’t Working In The Dragonfly Inn’s Kitchen Every Day

While the Dragonfly Inn confused fans, it was still cool to see Sookie and Lorelai go into business together.

When fans saw Lorelai again in the revival, they learned that Sookie was off working with Dan Barber and learning about agriculture and sustainability at Blue Hill farms. Sookie would definitely hate that she wasn’t spending every day whipping up scrumptious meals and desserts in the Dragonfly Inn kitchen. She seemed to find the most peace and happiness when in her own workspace, and this was evident by how upset she got when other people stepped in, as Luke did during her bed rest. She had total creative freedom here. Why would she give that up?

9 Proud: Took A Big Step In Her Career

Sookie was often comic relief in the series and while she was always funny, she was also ambitious and had a good work ethic.

Sookie would proud to see that in the revival, she took a big step in her career and worked with such an accomplished, talented, and beloved chef. She would never have dreamed that she could leave Stars Hollow and do something like this, so it seems like she would celebrate her courage. While fans wanted to see more Sookie, it’s true that she had always been in Lorelai’s shadow so it was great that she became more independent.

8 Hate: Broke Lorelai’s Heart

On the other hand, Sookie would hate that when she left the Dragonfly Inn, she left Lorelai with a broken heart, too.

The two had been friends for so long and while Sookie was allowed to follow her heart, it’s true that she and Lorelai had planned to run the Dragonfly Inn together. Lorelai didn’t realize that her friend’s wants and needs had changed, and it was a big moment in their friendship as they grappled with this change.

7 Proud: A Wife And Mother

In the first season of the show, Sookie was single, and it was sweet to see her marry Jackson and start a family.

Sookie would be proud that in the revival, she had created an amazing life for herself. She and Jackson had been married for years and they were happily raising their kids. Season 1 Sookie would probably never have predicted that she would have such a wonderful personal life. It was great to see as she and Jackson had so much in common.

6 Hate: Didn’t See Lorelai, Rory, And Michel All The Time

Gilmore Girls has many Lorelai and Sookie episodes and it was true that even though she and Michel got on each other’s nerves, Sookie enjoyed her banter with this character, too.

Sookie would hate that in the revival, she was living far away and didn’t get the chance to see her best friend on a regular basis. She wasn’t in Rory’s life, either, and she must have missed interacting with all of the wonderful characters in Stars Hollow every day. This made her career move bittersweet.

5 Proud: Finally Got To Make Lorelai’s Wedding Cake

In the second season of Gilmore Girls, Lorelai decided not to marry Max and Sookie didn’t let on that she had actually made the entire wedding cake when Lorelai phoned her with this bad news.

In the revival, Sookie finally got to make her best friend’s wedding cake. She explained that it was such an important moment that she had created a whole bunch of cakes. Lorelai was touched and fans loved seeing this reunion. It meant so much to Sookie that she could do this.

4 Hate: Lorelai Had To Find Another Chef To Take Over

Sookie disliked that Lorelai had to find a chef to take over the kitchen at the inn. Sookie was a bit of a control freak when it came to her domain, and whenever someone helped her out, she watched their every move like a hawk. She was upset with Lorelai for trying to replace her, which was exactly what fans expected from her.

Sookie struggled with wanting to be in charge all the time and finding her own work/life balance, and this was something that she probably hadn’t figured out in the revival, either, since she threw herself into what she was learning.

3 Proud: Got To Travel And See More Of The World

In the first season, Sookie never expressed much interest in leaving the charming small town of Stars Hollow. She seemed content with her life the way that it was.

It was unexpected to learn that she had started working on Blue Hill Farm, but it was a happy surprise, as it meant that she had taken a risk. She was able to travel and see more of the world, and this helped her learn more about food and grow as a chef.

2 Hate: Felt Some Guilt For Following Her Own Dream

When Sookie finally came back to the Dragonfly Inn and had a talk with Lorelai, it was clear that she felt bad for leaving Lorelai and not being honest about wanting more than just six months away.

Season 1 Sookie would have hated that she wasn’t totally honest with her best friend, and she would have felt guilty about the situation, too. No one wants to follow a dream and feel negatively about it, so this was a tough moment for Sookie.

1 Proud: Was Confident And Secure

Sookie always wanted to succeed and she was confident in the kitchen, but when it came to the rest of her life, she was definitely insecure and nervous.

Before realizing that Jackson had feelings for her, Sookie was hesitant to date and wasn’t sure if she should switch up her regular routine to have a better personal life. Sookie would be super proud that in A Year In The Life, she was secure with herself and her place in the world, and it was a major shift in a positive direction.
