The cast of Godzilla vs. Kong features two actors who have already been a part of previous Godzilla and King Kong franchises, apart from the MonsterVerse. Both Kyle Chandler and Lance Reddick were associated with Kong and Godzilla respectively prior to the launch of Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

Kyle Chandler, who played Mark Russell in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, will be reprising his role in Godzilla vs. Kong alongside two other returning cast members, Zhang Ziyi and Mille Bobby Brown, who will both be back as Dr. Chen and Mark’s teenage daughter, Madison Russell. Aside from these three, the star-studded cast of the upcoming 2021 crossover movie will be packed with actors who are new to the MonsterVerse. Receiving top billing in Godzilla vs. Kong is Alexander Skarsgård, who is reportedly playing a character with a close connection to Kong. Also included in the movie are Rebecca Hall, Demián Bichir, Jessica Henwick, Eiza González, Brian Tyree Henry, Julian Dennison, and Lance Reddick. Since no trailer for the movie has been released as of yet, very little is known about the new characters.

One interesting note about the cast is that Kyle Chandler and Lance Reddick have been involved in older Godzilla and Kong movies. Reddick, known for playing Phillip Broyles on Fringe and Charon in the John Wick movies, was just beginning his career when he made a brief, uncredited appearance as a soldier on the Manhattan Bridge in Sony Pictures’ American adaptation of Godzilla in 1998. It was only the actor’s second appearance on the big screen, with his first being in Great Expectations.

Kyle Chandler, on the other hand, was tied to King Kong long before his character developed a vendetta against Godzilla in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In 2005, Universal Pictures released King Kong, a remake of the 1933 monsterverse classic. Directed by Peter Jackson, the movie starred Naomi Watts and told the story of a group of people who come face-to-face with King Kong after coming to Skull Island to film a movie. The actor expected to play the male lead was Kyle Chandler’s Bruce Baxter, who accompanies the main characters in their journey on Skull Island. Baxter manages to survive the events that take place on both Skull Island and New York.

Both Chandler and Reddick are expected to be more important to Godzilla vs. Kong than they were to 2005’s King Kong and 1998’s Godzilla. There’s no official word on who Reddick will be playing, but it’s not hard to imagine his character being in a high-level position in the government or the military. Alternatively, he could portray one of Godzilla vs. Kong’s human villains. As for what the movie has planned for Chandler’s Mark Russell, it could be that he’ll once again be in the employ of Monarch. If so, his knowledge and experience with technology like the Orca could aid them in their exploration of Hollow Earth and the investigation into the origin of the Titans.
