The relationships in Harry Potter might not be the center of the story, but they do play a role. There are many different romantic relationships throughout the series. As Harry gets older, romances start to play more of a role in his life and his friends’ lives, but romantic relationships are also a big storyline for many of the adult characters.

While some of the relationships that are canon in this series were great and loved by fans, there were some other potential relationships that could have happened but didn’t. Here are some of the ten best couples that would have made a lot of sense but never got together.

10 Ron Weasley and Luna Lovegood

While this might not be a couple that people really think about as being good together, they would have been surprisingly good. Ron can be rather blunt, but he overall likes Luna and is interested in her strange ideas.

Luna and Ron are also rather good friends. Luna could help Ron be a little kinder and Ron could help Luna feel more accepted. They might have even been a better couple than Ron and Hermione.

9 Dean Thomas and Seamus Finnigan

There is a sad lack of LGBT+ representation in the Harry Potter books or series. Other than Dumbledore, whose sexuality isn’t really discussed at all in the series, there aren’t any characters that are confirmed to be LGBT+. This is a shame because some of the best potential pairings are queer ones.

Dean and Seamus were best friends throughout the series similar to Harry and Ron, and they could have easily dated, too even if this was just a side relationship that wasn’t a focus of the story.

8 Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown

These two are another pair of best friends who could have had more than just a friendship relationship. They were quite close throughout the entire series, and they were always seen together.

While we don’t know all that much about how they interact together, they seem rather close to one another, and it’s not hard to imagine them dating at one point.

7 Viktor Krum and Hermione Granger

While Hermione and Ron might be the canon couple, they aren’t necessarily perfectly matched. While some fans do love this pairing, there are also those that think they don’t make sense together and wouldn’t have lasted.

Viktor and Hermione seemed to get along pretty well and have good conversations, and Ron’s jealousy and the way he treated Hermione was often very immature. While Hermione and Viktor might not have lasted long either, they might have been better together than Hermione and Ron.

6 Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy

This is the only couple on this list that’s not from the original Harry Potter movies. Albus and Scorpius are the main characters from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and many people felt like they would have been a great opportunity to include positive LGBT representation in the series.

It would have been easy to make these two have a crush on one another and would have made a lot of sense to the story. Many fans would have loved to see a cute Hogwarts romance like this.

5 Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom

Many fans wanted Luna and Neville to end up together and were surprised when these two ended up with totally random people. In many ways, these two would have been great together.

They were both a bit eccentric and not popular while they were at school, and they were both extremely brave and compassionate people. There is even a nod to this potential relationship at the end of the Deathly Hallows Part 2 film.

4 Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley

Since most of the series is told through Harry’s perspective, fans didn’t get to see more private interactions between some of the other characters.

However, it’s made clear that Hermione and Ginny are friends as they often spent time together and shared a room when Hermione would stay at the Burrow. Instead of Ron, Ginny could have been a better match for Hermione because she was a lot more mature and emotionally intelligent.

3 Harry Potter and Hermione Granger

While Hermione and Ron might be the two people out of the trio who end up together, there’s an argument to be made for Harry and Hermione being the better couple. In many ways, Hermione was always better friends with Harry then she was with Ron. These two generally got along better and trusted each other a lot.

While their friendship was wonderful, they could also have been compatible in a romantic relationship. The main reason they didn’t make total sense is they didn’t have a lot of romantic chemistry in the books.

2 Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy

Harry and Draco are one of the most popular ships in the fandom. While these two clearly are rivals and even enemies at times, many people felt like they had great chemistry and that part of their obsession with one another could be because of a hidden crush.

For this couple to work, Draco would have had to come to realize the error of his parents’ ways much earlier on. But, as far as in fanfiction, these two actually work together well.

1 Sirius Black and Remus Lupin

Of all the couples on this list, this one seems the most obvious. It would have made a lot of sense if they got together as they clearly were close friends. Many people felt like Lupin, especially with the werewolf metaphors, was a queer-coded character, and these two in a romantic relationship would have been quite endearing.

Many people also felt like Lupin and Tonks’ relationship wasn’t great writing and that Lupin and Sirius would have been better together. Seeing these two start to date after Sirius’ innocence was proven would have been really great.
