Hawkeye: Jeremy Renner Reveals Clint Barton’s Real Superpowers

Jeremy Renner has revealed what Hawkeye‘s real superpower is. To further emphasize that Avengers: Endgame marked the end of the era for the franchise, the Joe and Anthony Russo film also functioned as the swan song to some of the universe’s founding heroes, such as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Captain America (Chris Evans). That left the MCU with only half of the original Avengers line-up, all of whom have already confirmed their return to the universe. This return starts with Clint Barton, who now stars in his own Disney+ TV series, Hawkeye.

Announced by Marvel Studios during San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the latest Disney+ show focuses on the Avengers’ resident marksman. Hawkeye is Clint’s first solo outing since he made his MCU debut in 2011 via Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. As part of this new story for Clint, Hawkeye also debuted the MCU’s newest hero in Kate Bishop, played by fan-favorite Hailee Steinfeld. Together, they team up to fight the Tracksuit Mafia and other mysterious comic-based villains. As Clint steps into a mentor role for Kate, there’s understandably more interest in learning more about the character and what differentiates him from other heroes in the Marvel universe.

Hawkeye is one of the few non-cosmically-enhanced superheroes in the MCU, but for Renner, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have any kind of special powers. During a press conference for Hawkeye (via CBR) the actor revealed that Clint’s unwavering commitment to his family is his real superpower. Renner argued that it makes the character very relatable to a lot of people, especially parents who want nothing but good things for their children. Read Renner’s comments below:

“There’s a wonderful pragmatic-ness to it. I think it really is the anchor and base to where all of his emotional steadfastness and actionability and relatability are for him and what his superpowers are. You don’t want to get in the way of any Papa Bear or Mama Bear and their family, ’cause you’re gonna go down.”

When Clint was introduced in MCU Phase 1, it wasn’t revealed that he has a family. It wasn’t until Avengers: Age of Ultron that The Bartons were introduced, as the Avengers took refuge in their secret farm. Since then, Hawkeye has attempted to retire from the superhero life to spend more time with them, but there’s always something that pulls him back to his old life. As the Hawkeye series focuses on his story, viewers should expect to learn more about his family and their relationship with each other. Considering Renner’s comment, it will be interesting to see if the actor is hinting at The Bartons finding themselves in danger later on in the series due to Clint’s run-in with the Tracksuit Mafia.

Amidst the craziness of the burgeoning MCU multiverse, Hawkeye offers something different with its more grounded narrative. Clint and Kate are tasked to fight street-level criminals, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be treated as serious threats; especially with Clint’s Ronin past coming back to haunt him. Beyond the show, however, it’s unknown what’s next for Hawkeye. While Renner did say that he wants to see Clint lead the West Coast Avengers as he did in the comics, there has been no concrete indication that it’s in Marvel Studios’ plan. In the meantime, audiences must be content with the insight into Clint’s loving home life that the new Hawkeye series will no doubt provide.
