Snapchat, since it was first created, has been blessed with a broad audience and is still one of the most used social media platforms to date. One of the main reasons for its popularity is the number of fun things people can do on the app. Users can customize many aspects of Snapchat according to their personality, including the use of emojis.

Emojis are considered a form of social currency on Snapchat. It’s a way for anybody using the service to keep track of the many connections they’ve made on the messaging app. Every symbol next to a person’s username means something when it appears and can change regularly. These emoticons can also be modified according to the user’s preferences.

Every Snapchat user gets to have up to eight best friends or other people that they chat with and send snaps to the most on the messaging service. These eight friends are featured in various parts of the app and get the perk of having their usernames adorned with a unique character called a friend emoji. Friend emojis are symbols that signify the level of communication shared with a particular contact, and by default, Snapchat has nine friend emojis already defined. For example, each ‘BF’ or best friend can be marked with a smiley face, and a yellow heart means two people are ‘Besties’ or each other’s main person they’ve sent the most snaps to. A cake emoticon signifies a Snapchat user’s birthday. A red heart means two people are ‘BFF’ status who’ve been each other’s number one contact for two weeks in a row, and double red hearts means they’ve been each other’s ‘Super BFF’ for two months in a row.

Why Change Emojis On Snapchat, And How To Do It

Although Snapchat’s preset friend emojis are already universally known by those who frequently use the app, there is an available option to customize the list so that different symbols appear to mark all the various snap milestones with friends. For example, a user can use a pizza icon instead of a cake emoji for a birthday celebrant. Likewise, Besties can have the mermaid emoticon next to their names instead of the yellow heart. Using customized friend emojis is an excellent way of personalizing a user’s Snapchat experience. Users get to associate more meaningful symbols to their most treasured contacts on the app and are not limited to just hearts and smiley faces.

To change friend emojis on Snapchat, launch the app and tap on the Profile icon on the top of the screen. Hit ‘Settings’ (gear icon). If using an Android device, scroll down the Settings menu, tap ‘Customize Emojis,’ and go through the emoticon categories that need to be edited. On an iOS device, scroll down and tap ‘Manage’ under ‘Additional Services,’ then hit ‘Friend Emojis’ to get to the list of default icons and tap the ones that need to be customized. iPhone users can also modify the skin tone of the emojis they use on the app by picking ‘Emoji Skin Tone’ on the ‘Manage’ page and choosing the one that matches theirs in real life.

It is important to note that custom Snapchat emojis only appear changed on the user’s Snapchat account and may appear differently on other people’s devices. Furthermore, not all emojis are available to use. To revert back to the original Snapchat friend emojis, go through the same process and tap ‘Reset to default’ at the bottom of the friend emojis list page.
