Legend of Mana has just received a remastered release. Some of the changes are welcome, while others don’t seem to have gone far enough to utilize current generation hardware. However, this re-release seems like a way for Square Enix to test the waters for the next Mana series game.

Unlike other main entries that use fixed parties, Legend of Mana Remastered instead allows players to swap in different companions at a time. Some are mandatory, others optional, and even a few will refuse if another character is present. As each partner bringer certain skills, players will want to choose party members wisely.

Main Story Characters in Legend of Mana Remastered

Several characters will be met during the main storyline, which branches off into three subplots. Characters use the same base weapon and armor types, but will upgrade their used crafting materials as the player levels up and completes quests.

Larc

Larc is one of the two main characters of the Dragoon storyline. He spends most of his time right at the entrance of Underworld, joining as long as there is no other companion. He will temporally unviable during the storyline’s last quest, The Crimson Dragon, but will return afterward. He wields a one-handed axe (but no shield) and uses the attacks Birds of Prey, Cutting Pine, Boulder Dash, and Ground Breaker. His abilities are set as Whirl and Counterstrike. Last, his Synchro will deal extra damage to dragon enemies.

Sierra

She is the other main character of the Dragoon quests. For most of the game, she will be an antagonist working for the dragons of the White Forest. However, in the final mission of the storyline, she will be a mandatory companion. Afterward, she will be recruitable at Vadise’s throne in the White Forest. Sierra wields dual daggers, utilizing the attacks Rising Eagle, Vortex of Death, Backstab, and Air Strike. Her abilities are Double Jump and Back Flip. For her Synchro, members will have heightened defense against dragons.

Escad

Escad is one of the leads of the Faerie Story. He is mutually exclusive to Daena, and only one of the two can remain permanently. As the story reach the Mindas Ruins, players will need to either aid Escad or remain neutral, either ensures his survival. For the final mission at Lucemia, players must first head to the Jungle and ask Escad to join. Otherwise, he will be found dying inside the dungeon itself. Escad uses two-handed swords, with the attacks Shish Kebob, Impulse, Splashblade, and Life Stealer. His abilities are High Jump and Slide. His Synchro will cause attacks to have added magical effects.

Daena

Daena is the other star of the Faerie series of missions. She cannot be recruited unless Escad is eliminated from the story. As with her rival, players must side with Daena and defeat Escad. Later, before the final mission players must to Gato Grottoes and bring Daena to Lucemina. Otherwise she will retire from adventuring after so much grief over her friends’ deaths. Daena uses flails, along with attacks Setting Sun, Pscyclone, Back Slasher, and Around the World. Her abilities are Push and Toss. Her Synchro will automatically restore hitpoints when moving.

Elazul

Elazul is the primary combat party member for the Jumi storyline. He will wander around where the quests take him, but will eventually settle on staying at the Bejeweled City. He uses one-hand swords (but no shield) with attacks Iai Strike, Bird of Prey, Cross Strike, and Laser Blade. He uses Bash and Tackle for his abilities. His Synchro will rapidly increase the power of the attack gauge.

Pearl

Pearl is another important part of the Jumi quests, storywise at least. For the most part, she is simply an escorted character who uses no weapons, no attacks, and can only crouch. At minimum her Synchro will heal negative status effects. Like Elazul she will await at the Bejeweled City after completing all Jumi missions.

Lady Blackpearl

Lady Blackpearl is Pearl’s true form, awoken during key story events. Sometimes this will include becoming hostile for some missions but will be quite useful once calming down. She will morph into her Lady Blackpearl form when visiting the Bejeweled City on Jinn’s Day and remain in the state until leaving the party. If the Bejweled City was created in a strange map location, players may need to travel back and forth until Jinn’s Day. She is a powerhouse with a hammer, using attacks Superslugger, Blammo, Blazing Hammer, and Soul Reaver. Her abilities are evade and lunge. Her Synchro is a spruced version of Elazul’s and will instantly max the attack gauge.

Side Characters in Legend of Mana Remastered

There are additional characters who play roles in side quests but aren’t mandatory for the main quest concerning the Mana Tree.

Second Main Character

Players that have made multiple heroes can import them into other adventures. Speak to Nouvelle at the church in Domina about multiplayer. From then on, players can recruit old main characters at the house in the town square. While in the party the other hero cannot be edited but will retain any earned experience points when leaving.

Niccolo

Niccolo is a merchant and has multiple missions to improve business. When off duty he will be in Domina. He uses gloves along with the attacks Lightning Kick, Jawbreaker, Giant Swing, and a Gift for You. His abilities are somersault and back roll. His Synchro will increase the amount of money earned from defeated enemies.

Bud

Bud can be encountered in the outskirts of Domina and once defeated will remain at the Hero’s Home. He uses a frying pan that acts as two-handed sword with attacks Rising Crush, Dirt Harp, Tree Drum, and Tree Flute. His abilities include Cheer and Crouch. His Synchro increases Spirit.

Lisa

Lisa is Bud’s sister and recruited at the same time as him. She uses a staff shaped as a broom, with attacks Halo, Gold Flute, Fire Drum, and Fire Harp. Her abilities are cheer and spin. Her Synchro increases magic.

Elle

Elle is a secret character locked behind four quests: Faeries Light in Lumina, Summer Lovin at Madora Beach, Drowned Dreams at Polpota Harbor, and finally A Siren’s Song back at Lumina. Elle will be available anytime one returns to her lighthouse. She is a mage with no weapon, but uses the attack spells Water Drum, Water Flute, Wind Harp, and Wind Marimba. Her Synchro increases magic defense.
