The iPhone SE 3 (iPhone SE 2022) is Apple’s newest and cheapest iPhone and the first in the SE series with 5G support among other upgrades. The new iPhone SE was one of the multiple new announcements at Apple’s 2022 spring event which also included the iPad Air 5, a new chip, the Mac Studio, and the Studio Display.

Apple is expected to keep making the iPhone SE as the budget offering in its iPhone lineup. While it has used the same design twice now, a radical change is expected for the next model which is speculated to arrive in 2024. Knowing Apple, this new design may actually be one currently in use by its numbered series which would have been retired by then, but perfectly suited to the low-cost iPhone SE.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The iPhone SE 3 visually is unchanged from its predecessor. This is the same chassis as the iPhone SE 2 which originally belongs to the iPhone 8. The frame is made of aluminum and there is glass on both sides. Apple doesn’t say the type of glass it has used but claims it is the toughest in a smartphone. There are still huge bezels on the front and the classic Home button which houses the Touch ID sensor. Like the other iPhones, it has a Lightning connector and is missing an audio jack. It also has an IP67 dust and water-resistance rating which means it can be immersed in water up to 1 meter and for up to 30 minutes. Apple has released the new iPhone in three colors – (PRODUCT) RED, Midnight, and Starlight.

iPhone SE 3 Specifications

Apple’s new iPhone SE 3 has a 4.7-inch Retina HD (1334 x 750) True Tone display. The screen is an IPS LCD 60Hz panel with a maximum brightness of 625 nits and it is covered with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG which means users will be able to stream movies, shows, and live broadcasts that support these formats. Below the display is a home button that has a built-in fingerprint scanner for Touch ID, which can be used to unlock the device and make payments on the web and in apps.

The iPhone SE 3 has a 7MP f/2.2 camera and a single 12MP f/1.8 rear camera. Both cameras pack lots of features including Deep Fusion, Photographic Styles, and Smart HDR 4 for photos. Unfortunately, it is lacking a Night mode but Apple says the rear camera can pick up high levels of detail when recording in low-light. The rear camera can record in 4K at 60 fps while the front camera can record in 1080p at 30 fps and slo-mo videos in 1080p at 120 fps. The phone has support for dual SIM (nano and eSIM). It also has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and support for sub-6 GHz 5G networks.

The new chipset inside the phone is Apple’s A15, the same one inside the iPhone 13. It is up to 1.2x faster than the previous generation and is more energy-efficient. The processor also brings new camera features to the phone thanks to its ability to handle the required computations. The 5nm chip has six CPU cores and four GPU cores, and it is paired with 4GB of RAM. There are three storage options — 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB — and they are non-expandable. Apple doesn’t state the battery capacity but says it has been enhanced, which is best understood as able to provide up to 2 extra hours of video playback compared to the last-gen. There is support for fast charging (zero to 50 percent in 30 minutes) via a 20W or higher charger that has to be purchased separately. The iPhone SE 3 isn’t visually different from its predecessor, but it is evident that there are multiple upgrades and new features.
