The Office: Somehow We Manage is an upcoming mobile game inspired by hit NBC sitcom The Office. Set to release late in 2021, it promises to immerse players in some of the most iconic moments from the show. Fans of The Office, though, will likely want to know if The Office: Somehow We Manage will be free to play.

The game is being developed by East Side Games, a subsidiary of LEAF Mobile. East Side Games has adapted a number of television sitcoms to mobile games, including It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Meet the Goldbergs and Archer, among others. Similar to The Office: Somehow We Manage, these games focus on animated scenes from their respective shows for fans to engage with, built around a central gameplay hook.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to a LEAF Mobile press release, The Office: Somehow We Manage will be free to download and play. Although the game’s monetization system hasn’t been detailed, it will likely generate revenue through ads and microtransactions, much like other titles released by the studio. Screenshots reference possible premium currencies like “Scottcoins,” “Leads,” and “In-Game Cash.” Progression in previous East Side Games titles tends to rely on leveling up characters and their abilities with items; in It’s Always Sunny: The Gang Goes Mobile, it’s Beer and Cash, while The Goldbergs: Back to the ’80s uses Cool Points. Scottcoins and Cash could fill that role here, likely tied to some kind of microtransaction.

How The Office: Somehow We Manage Could Be Monetized

The game tasks Michael Scott with improving the Scranton Dunder Mifflin branch’s performance to avoid downsizing, all the while dealing with Corporate taking its share of money at the end of each day. Players will “Tap, upgrade, and build desks for favorite characters,” “Get new leads and tap away as the in-game rewards start rolling in,” and “Click throughmemorable episodes from all nine [The Office] seasons.” A screenshot captioned with “Earn Rewards” also shows what looks like a paper-bag loot box rewarding Stanley as an “Epic“-rarity character, suggesting a level of randomness to progression. All of these elements could easily see microtransactions incorporated into them.

If The Office mobile game sticks to the pattern of its predecessors, players will either purchase items like Scottcoins for a quick win, accumulate them through watching ads, or earn them through standard gameplay. Spending money on the game is at each player’s discretion, but it’s unknown how much The Office: Somehow We Manage’s gameplay will encourage participating in in-game purchases.
