James Gunn Confirms Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Is The End For The Team
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has once again gone on record as saying that the third installment in his trilogy will be the last time audiences will see the familiar team together. Gunn first made his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 with the original Guardians movie before following it up with Vol. 2 in 2017. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently set to be the final chapter in Gunn’s intergalactic saga, is set for a 2023 release.
The first Guardians movie introduced viewers to the core team of Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel). While only having two standalone movies to date, the Guardians have played a pivotal role in the larger MCU, joining the fight against Thanos in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Audiences have come to know and love the band of misfits that make up the current Guardians of the Galaxy roster, but the series’ director is warning fans that the team is about to see some major changes.
While speaking on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast to discuss his HBO Max series Peacemaker, which is currently the number one show in the world, Gunn said that the third Guardians film will surprise fans, calling it, “big and dark.” When pressed on what the future holds for the GotG franchise after Vol. 3, Gunn said viewers should expect a new lineup for the team, insisting the third chapter will be the last time the original crew is seen together. Check out his comments below:
This is the end for us. This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians… I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. So that is always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.
This isn’t the first time Gunn has warned fans that the franchise’s third installment would be the last time they’d see the team as they currently know it. Gunn has said in the past that the fourth installment in the franchise would feature a new Guardians of the Galaxy squad, though it’s still a mystery as to who it will be comprised of. But considering how much comic book lore there is to pull from, there’ll be plenty of options when assembling the next crew.
There are a lot of unanswered questions in regards to the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. This upcoming movie may be the last ride for Peter Quill and company, but that just leaves the door open for a new team of Guardians to take their place for the next generation of fans. James Gunn turned second and third-tier comic book characters into household names with the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Now that the original team’s story is coming to an end, hopefully Marvel can replicate that success with the next Guardians crew.
