JK Simmons says that his return as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far From Home was both bizarre and wonderful. The star played Jameson in the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy in an iconic performance that’s remained immensely popular even today. When Simmons returned to reprise the Jameson role in a special cameo in Spider-Man: Far From Home – albeit an alternate-reality, conspiracy theory-spouting version of the character – the fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Far From Home introduced the idea of an MCU multiverse in a bigger way than the franchise had really explored before, and the inclusion of Simmons’ Jameson character opened the door for speculation on what old characters could show up in the franchise next. More recently, Loki has added a lot of lore about the MCU timeline and how it works, hinting that a true multiverse may return in the near future. That would allow for even more fan-favorite characters to join the franchise, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

Speaking recently with Variety, Simmons discussed his J. Jonah Jameson reprisal and how it felt to step into a new version of the Spider-Man world. The actor called the experience “weird, bizarre, wonderful,” and praised both Sam Raimi’s comic book universe and that of the MCU. He also included a tease that he’d be excited to play Jameson again in the current Spider-Man franchise. Read his full quote below.

“Weird, bizarre, wonderful, you know. Of course, I was in the Sam Raimi version of that universe, which I loved, loved, loved so much, and now I’m in the new version of that universe, which I’ve also embraced and am having a great time in, and look forward to, maybe, more.”

Getting Simmons back as Jameson in Spider-Man: No Way Home would be a great touch for longtime fans. The new movie is rumored to be exploring the multiverse in lots of fun new ways, with speculated cameos from past Spider-Man stars including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Willem Dafoe. Alfred Molina (Doc Ock) and Jamie Foxx (Electro) have already been confirmed for the sequel. With this lineup, it’s possible Spider-Man: No Way Home will be a live-action version of the Spider-Verse storyline, which would open up a lot of exciting narrative opportunities.

The MCU is already dabbling in that kind of multiverse story in Loki, which includes numerous different variants of the eponymous god of mischief. WandaVision also hinted at a multiverse cameo by bringing in Evan Peters – who played Quicksilver in the Fox X-Men movies – but that turned out to be an elaborate ruse. So far, it looks like the Multiverse will be the true overarching story of Phase 4, rather than a villain like Thanos. That means that fans can probably expect more of Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as a range of other cameos.
