Dune actor Josh Brolin has officially revealed that he thinks the upcoming sci-fi epic is a cinematic masterpiece. The actor portrays the character Gurney Halleck in the latest directorial effort from Denis Villeneuve. Brolin and Villeneuve previously worked together on the acclaimed 2015 movie, Sicario.

An adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name, 2021’s Dune is the first movie in a planned two-part sci-fi epic series. Taking place on the planet Arrakis, the film centers on a young man named Paul (Timothee Chalamet), the heir to a noble family, who finds himself embroiled in an intense conflict between warring families over a valuable substance known as “spice.” In addition to Chalamet and Josh Brolin, the film’s star-studded cast includes Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, and Stellan Skarsgard, among many others.

Now, with Dune’s October 2021 release on the horizon and fan expectations quite high, Brolin has made his opinions of the final product abundantly clear: he loves it. In fact, in a recent interview with ACE Universe (via Comicbook.com), Brolin explained his position on the film, referring to it as a “cinematic masterpiece” and invoking his time on the 2008 Best Picture winner No Country For Old Men. Read what Brolin said about Dune below:

They screened the movie for us when it was finally done. And I was so blown away. I mean, I can say, I think I can safely say it’s a masterpiece. It truly is a cinematic masterpiece, what he was able to do and hold all those characters and give all those characters their time and day but then also hold the story on top of that, and do justice to the story. And the lighting, which was done by Greg Fraser, who I ended up doing a book with, we just finished our book which is his photographs and my writing, that’s going to come out around the time that Dune comes out, all this stuff. It just was one of those moments where it all comes together — No Country [For Old Men] was kind of like that, to where it was like ‘Did you have the feeling that something was going to be great?’ and you’re like, ‘No, I’m having a good time. I love doing this, but you don’t know until you see it how great it’s going to be.’

Josh Brolin is one of many Hollywood insiders who have recently shared their praise of Dune ahead of its release. In fact, Brolin’s fellow Dune star, Jason Momoa, similarly praised the film in a recent interview – noting that he wants a 4 to 6 hour cut of Dune to come out. Additionally, Chloe Zhao, the director of Marvel’s upcoming Eternals movie, also recently had some great things to say about Dune, noting that she was “blown away” by the film. If nothing else, it’s clear that Brolin is not alone in his high opinions of the film.

In many ways, Dune represents the latest iteration of Denis Villeneuve as a filmmaker. Taking on projects of increasing size and complexity through films such as Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, the Canadian director has consistently proven himself a favorite among critics, even if his movies sometimes underperform at the box office. With so many Hollywood heavyweights sharing their praise for the film ahead of its release, hope remains high that the eagerly awaited sequel eventually materializes. Dune will hit both theaters and HBO Max on October 22.
