Marvel has confirmed the X-Men‘s teleporter Magik is pansexual – in the strangest possible way. The last decade has seen the young mutant called Magik become a major player in the X-Men comics. Possessed with the power to open teleportational “stepping discs” that instantly transport her from one place to another, Magik was raised in a Hellish dimension and has struggled to acclimatize to normal life.

Magik has never shown much interest in sex and relationships. While that may simply reflect her unconventional upbringing, readers have often speculated she’s completely asexual. Interestingly, though, alternate-universe versions of Magik – such as one seen in Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars event back in 2015 – have tended to be gay. Now, though, Marvel has revealed the mainstream Magik has far more diverse sexual tastes.

New Mutants #5 picks up with Magik and her closest friends on a mission to space. They’re essentially stuck in a cosmic version of Game of Thrones, tasked with protecting a member of the House Neramani – Deathbird – as she returns to the Shi’ar Imperium. Members of an opposing faction launch an attack, and Magik heads off to confront three of them at once. Amusingly, her version of pre-battle “smack talk” consists of asking the alien invaders if they want to make out with her.

It’s an absolutely hilarious scene, and it’s perfectly in-character too; long-time readers will remember Brian Bendis’ Uncanny X-Men run, where Magik proposed taking advantage of the Avengers being stuck in a time field. Much to Cyclops’ bemusement, her idea was to teleport into Avengers Tower and switch their underwear drawers. But this scene is particularly interesting because it’s the first time Magik has ever shown any hint of sexuality or sexual interest in the mainstream Marvel Universe. She may just be joking around, having fun at the aliens’ expense, but something about this confrontation made her think of making out. The reactions are particularly entertaining; the War-Skrull is bemused, and the mantis-like insectoid named Offset is bewildered. Hypernova, a failed Shi’ar Superguardian, admits she wouldn’t mind making out, but right now she’s working. That leads Magik to move on. As she observes, the aliens had a choice; “It was @#$& or fight,” she tells them, “and you have chosen poorly.

New Mutants #5 seemingly confirms Magik is about as pansexual as you can get, in that she’s interested in anything – male or female, human or alien. It’s the second time the New Mutants universe hinted at LGBTQ+ relationships, as Wolfsbane and Dani Moonstar are set to be a couple in the New Mutants film. Given Magik was brought up among demons, it’s frankly possible that she finds aliens a lot more attractive than humans; if so, living on Krakoa, where “make more mutants” is literally a law, would probably have been getting on her nerves. New Mutants #5 is on sale now from comic book stores.
