Warning: contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 336

The reveal of the traitor in My Hero Academia was a major moment that fans have long been waiting for, but there are many reasons to fear for the safety of these students beyond mere intelligence leaks.

Chapter 335 of My Hero Academia ended on a note that implied the U.A. traitor was Toru Hagakure, but 336 showed that Toru was merely spying on the real traitor: Yuga Aoyama, also known by his absurd hero name “Can’t Stop Twinkling.” Aoyama was in the forest near U.A., speaking with his parents about the favors they owed All for One. As it turns out, Aoyama was born quirkless, like Deku, but his parents made a deal with All for One to get him one. Certain aspects of his quirk, such as the intense stomach pains that using it causes, suddenly made much more sense, since his body wasn’t accustomed to that quirk.

But All for One doesn’t just give out quirks for free and having to repay that debt is what has forced Aoyama into the position of betraying his friends, even though he didn’t want to. All for One and his scientist friend Dr. Garaki have hundreds and possibly thousands of quirks available to them, and have a way to duplicate these quirks so that they can be given to Nomu or other minions of his. All for One’s generous gifting of a quirk can have far more strings attached than mere favors, however. In My Hero Academia Vigilantes, All for One’s prototype Nomu, Number Six, was not only equipped with several quirks, but also left him with a “vestige” of All for One in his mind, which took on the image of the hero O’Clock to better influence Six. And, just as All Might seemed to have some awareness of what the vestige of himself residing in One for All was saying to an unconscious Midoriya, All for One was able to learn and communicate through this vestige. Who’s to say that Aoyama hasn’t been cursed with one of these vestiges as well, passively gathering even more intelligence than what Aoyama has provided willingly?

And yet, even that wouldn’t be the worst-case scenario. When All for One provided the Air Walk quirk to former hero-turned-mercenary Lady Nagant, he included a little extra as well: a self-destruct quirk. When Lady Nagant began to hesitate and come around to Deku during chapter 315, All for One makes some commentary on his “failure clause” and causes her to explode, nearly killing her. While it’s not immediately clear from the context of the chapter whether this was something preprogrammed in or something which All for One actively engaged via his vestige, it’s clear that anyone who’s received a quirk or had one taken away by All for One could potentially be in grave danger. What if Aoyama was also given one of these self-destructing quirks unknowingly, one that’s programmed to explode when his status as a traitor is revealed?

While both these scenarios are pretty bad, there are a lot of other horrible situations that could arise, given the variety of quirks seen in the My Hero Academia series. Aoyama could also be made to transform into a monster, or release a cloud of poison gas, or emit radiation. All for One may call the people he has power over his “friends,” but all anyone really is to him is a pawn, ready to be disposed of at a moment’s notice. It’s an unenviable situation for everyone, but worst of all for Aoyama, who seems doomed no matter My Hero Academia’s ending.
