Author Rick Riordan confirms that Percy Jackson season 1 will be eight episodes long. Based on Riordan’s original best-selling novel series Percy Jackson & the Olympians, the Disney+ show was first announced in 2020 and the series was officially greenlit early this year. Riordan later announced that production on Percy Jackson season 1 will begin in June 2022 in Vancouver. The live-action fantasy series will follow the titular character as he explores his destiny as a demigod in a modern world filled with myths and monsters.

Although Riordan’s immensely popular novels have been adapted for the screen before, both the 2010 Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and the 2013 Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters disappointed some fans with their departure from the source material. Even Riordan himself was vocally upset by the movies’ adaptations. Riordan assured fans that, unlike the previous movies, he would be involved in Disney+’s Percy Jackson every step of the way. Since the series was first announced, the author has been giving regular updates on the show.

This week, Riordan gave his latest update on the show’s progress. In a post on his website, Riordan revealed that there will be eight episodes in Percy Jackson season 1. While discussing the series’ scripts, the creator shared that the first four episodes are nearly complete and that he and the rest of the writing team are still working on the remaining four. Read an excerpt from Riordan’s update below:

“Script work is also coming along nicely. We have scripts for the first four episodes pretty much done, and are hard at work on the remaining four of season one. The writers’ room continues”

Because the series is still pretty early into its production, not many details about the Percy Jackson Disney+ series have been made available. Still, Riordan has expressed his hope that the show would stretch 5 seasons, with season 1 covering The Lightning Thief. If that is the direction the show takes, Percy’s desperate odyssey across the nation to retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt will span eight episodes rather than a 2-hour long movie. This should ensure that none of Percy’s encounters with gods or monsters are rushed through or cut as they had been with the film.

While each update from Riordan is one step closer to the series premiere, there is still a lot of work to be done until Percy Jackson finally arrives on Disney+. Not only do the remaining four episodes need to be written, but also casting and set and costume design need to be completed before filming on Percy Jackson can begin. As the Percy Jackson series continues to progress, fans should keep an eye out for Riordan’s next update.
