Netflix debuts a new Power of the Dog trailer giving a better look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s menacing cowboy and distaste for his family. Based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name, the film revolves around Cumberbatch’s charismatic rancher Phil Burbank, who inspires fear and awe in those around him. However, when his brother George brings home a new wife and her son, Phil simultaneously finds himself torn between games of psychological torment and the possibility of love.

Cumberbatch leads the ensemble cast of The Power of the Dog that also includes Golden Globe nominee Kirsten Dunst, Primetime Emmy nominee Jesse Plemons, X-Men‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee, Last Night in Soho star Thomasin McKenzie, Golden Globe winner France Conroy and Oscar winner Keith Carradine. Jane Campion’s adaptation of the novel has been in the works for two years now, with Cumberbatch remaining the sole original star cast after Elisabeth Moss and Paul Dano would depart due to scheduling conflicts with The Handmaid’s Tale and The Batman, respectively, and Dunst and Plemons taking their place. After suffering a setback with production shutdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Power of the Dog is gearing up for its arrival in select theaters and Netflix.

Much like the first Power of the Dog trailer, the latest look at the Western drama offers plenty of exciting looks at Cumberbatch’s first major return to villainy in years. Though having taken on the roles of antagonists Smaug and The Necromancer in The Hobbit trilogy and Shere Khan in Andy Serkis’ Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, those were achieved through vocal performances and motion capture. In contrast, his turn as Phil Burbank in The Power of the Dog allows him to better utilize his entire range of acting for his complex villain.

Anticipation has been building for The Power of the Dog‘s arrival over the past couple of months following the film’s acclaimed debuts in the film festival circuit. Having made its world premiere at this year’s Venice International Film Festival, Campion brought home the Silver Lion for Best Direction, marking a strong return to feature filmmaking after over a decade and building plenty of Oscar buzz as awards season gets underway. The wait for The Power of the Dog is almost over as the film will hit select theaters on November 17 followed by Netflix on December 1.
