On Pretty Little Liars, there were five main characters: Alison DiLaurentis, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields. Emily was an athlete. She was an only child. She had a big heart. She ended up marrying the love of her life, Alison. And she dressed in a sporty and casual way.

Along with all of the outfits she wore over the years, she also showed off a variety of hairstyles. Since she was a swimmer with a relaxed vibe, she did usually opt for natural waves worn down or ponytails. However, as the list below proves, she styled her hair in different ways, including these five worst and five best ‘dos!

11 Her Low Ponytail

As mentioned, ponytails were very common on this character, but some were better than others. In this scene, Emily wore a low one that she seemed to have just thrown together haphazardly.

While it was refreshing that she did not feel the need to have full-on glam at all times, this was not the cutest look for this adorable gal.

10 Her Messy Jailbird Hair

Similarly, there were super low moments that landed these friends in jail and in a creepy dollhouse. Obviously, they had bigger things to worry about than how their hair was styled! Still, the messiness of Em’s hair in this image has landed on the not-so-great side of this list.

9 Her Winter Hat

Emily was not a big fan of hats, but she was seen in a few over the years. One of them was this white winter hat that was okay but not super flattering. It didn’t feel like her either and didn’t match her style well.

Plus, it hid her great head of hair and the locks that were seen just laid there, lifeless and boring.

8 Her Camp Mona Blowout

One year, Mona had a glamping-themed birthday party, which included spa treatments for everyone who was invited. As usual, the main characters were busy sneaking around and playing the A game… but Aria and Emily still found themselves in the hair tent, which led to these blowouts.

It was evident that PLL was all about the drama, but the cliffhangers and thrills were far better than these over-the-top hairdos!

7 Her Ice Ball Look

The last look that left little to be desired was put on display during the ice ball, one of Rosewood’s many glam school dances. Everyone looked fabulous in blue, silver, and white gowns, and Emily had this slicked-back hairstyle.

It didn’t look horrible; she just had so many others that were so much better, such as the five next ones.

6 Her Cute Ponytail

Here are some examples of the really cute way Em could style a ponytail. It could be high and bouncy. It could have tendrils hanging down around her face. And it could still keep everything pulled back and out of the way, whether she was working at The Brew, doing homework at school, running from someone in a black hoodie or swimming.

5 Her Golden Hues

At one point within this television series, Emily put some golden highlights in her hair. It was sort of surprising since she always had this dark brunette hair, but it worked out really well, obviously.

Since this character was known for her caring, sensitive, and warm ways, these golden hues fit her well.

4 Her Side-Swept Waves

There were moments when Emily would sweep all of her hair to one side, which added some drama yet still looked very relaxed. A particular instance of this took place in California when Em was working as a bartender during the time jump forward.

It was easy and breezy, making it a win for this sporty character, and it still showed off her voluminous hair in a beautiful way.

3 Her Messy Mom Hair

On a similar note, there were the messy waves seen during Em’s time at home with her daughters. For years, she had struggled to find her place and her path, and she finally found it; she moved back to Rosewood, she married Ali, and she raised two twin girls!

This definitely suited her well, as did her messy-hair-don’t-care look during these scenes.

2 Her Pulled-Back Locks

A popular way to wear hair is to pull some of the front pieces back and clip them at the back of the head. As pictured here, Em did that at least once, and it was very pretty.

Plus, the outfit she wore with this ‘do was one of her best: a really cool acid-wash denim shirt.

1 Her Prom Style

Perhaps Emily’s best hairstyle in the show was seen at her last prom; there was a fairy tale theme, the girls were confined to Spencer’s barn, but they snuck off and found out who A was.

During it all, Em was wearing this black patchwork dress. She had these lovely brown waves around her face. And she topped it all off with this neat, black, spiky crown!
