Disney confirmed that The Princess and The Frog is getting spin-off series on Disney+. On World Investor Day, Disney announced over 100 new projects for Star Wars, Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic, Disney+, and more. The projects spanned from as soon as the beginning of 2021 through to the end of 2023. Disney is introducing both spin-offs and original works. However, the clear theme is predominantly animated series, which makes the most sense for these times.

Disney’s The Princess and the Frog released in theaters in 2009. The film takes place in New Orleans and follows Tiana, who aspires to open a restaurant. She meets Prince Naveen, who has been turned into a frog. Thinking she is princess, Naveen kisses her turning them both into frogs. The two then must take a journey across the bayou to find a voodoo priestess who can help them return to their human form.

Disney confirmed that The Princess and the Frog is one of its animated movies getting a spin-off TV series. The series will be titled Tiana and will likely follow the titular character’s marriage to Naveen, her new royalty status, and operating her restaurant. The series launches on Disney+ in 2022, along with the Zootopia spin-off series Zootopia+. Big Hero Six spin-off titled Baymax! will be released a year prior in 2021, and Moana: The Series will follow up in 2023. These four spin-offs will be Disney’s first-ever original animated series.

The Princess and The Frog is an excellent choice for a spin-off series. Although the movie musical was enjoyable, it didn’t receive the credit it deserved at the time. Compared to other Disney animated classics, it is considered a box office flop. It may not have been Disney’s best film, but what it represented was a more important factor that got diminished. Tiana was Disney’s first-ever black Princess, and The Princess and The Frog was the first Disney film to explore Haitian culture. It is lovely that Disney brought Tiana back to explore these themes and promote diversity.

Tiana makes sense from a business standpoint, as well. Disney Theme Parks recently announced a major refurbishment of Splash Mountain that includes completely retheming the ride to ditch the outdated Song of the South references. Instead of  Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Bear, park guests will be greeted by Tiana, Naveen, and the story of The Princess and The Frog.

Disney appears to be clinging tightly to its reviving-fan-favorites strategy. Between sequel Hocus Pocus 2, Sister Act 3, Enchanted 2, the Cheaper By the Dozen revamp, and the animated spin-off series, Disney targets nostalgic fans by revisiting and updating classic films. Simultaneously, while it would be refreshing to see more original movies and TV series, it’s understandable due to the industry’s current circumstances.
