A new approach to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition’s Creation Club quests aims to fix the worst problem encountered in new Skyrim Special Edition playthroughs. The Elder Scrolls game has released on just about every console (and even refrigerators) to come out since the game’s initial release in 2011, and recent editions have come with various improvements, such as the inclusion of every DLC expansion and the integration of mods on consoles via the Creation Club. More will be added and tweaked in the latest re-release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, last-gen consoles, and PC, such as Skyrim: Hearthfire’s new aquariums and many quality-of-life changes.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is being billed by Bethesda as the game’s definitive version. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, free Creation Club mod content is being offered to all SkyrimSpecial Edition owners, as well as a free new-gen upgrade for customers who first buy the Anniversary Edition on PS4 and Xbox One. However, last-gen players who own Skyrim Special Edition will instead be able to upgrade to Anniversary Edition at a reduced price. The anniversary festivities extend beyond the game itself, as a November event will feature the “Skyrim Museum,” a collection of fan works celebrating the game and a concert featuring music from the game. A recent trademark application indicates that even Elder Scrolls home products are on the way to celebrate Skyrim’s 10th birthday.

In a new Bethesda blog post, more details about Skyrim Anniversary Edition were shared, including a change to the Creation Club stopping it from automatically initializing on startup. This will ease the quest overload new players face in Skyrim Special Edition, as some find it overwhelming to be immediately confronted with heaps of quests downloaded from the Creation Club after starting a new playthrough. Instead, Bethesda suggests this change will make it “easy to encounter these [quests] organically while adventuring across Skyrim.” Those who want to go after particular Creation Club quests can read their store description, which will explain how to start them. This may be a balm for Skyrim Special Edition modders, who have been warned that Skyrim AnniversaryEdition will break their mods.

Bethesda also outlines new Creation Club content coming to Skyrim Anniversary Edition, including the return of some weapons and armor from The Elder Scroll III:Morrowind and a questline involving Oblivion gates from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Customers who upgrade from Skyrim Special Edition to the Anniversary Edition will receive these and the rest of the Creation Club content – all of which can also be purchased individually if desired. The additions range from small, such as a variety of new potion ingredients to large overhauls like a fully-fledged Skyrim Survival Mode bringing new factors like weather and hunger to make the game more difficult. The Anniversary Edition also adds fishing to Skyrim ten years after release, a increasingly must-have feature in RPGs like it.

The launch of Skyrim Anniversary Edition is imminent, bringing with it tons of content and a retrospective looks at the most successful Elder Scrolls entry’s decade-long history. With The Elder Scrolls 6 announced but still far from release, hopefully this new edition of Skyrim will be enough to tide players over for now.
