Skyrim: How to Get Glass (& What It’s Used For)

Glass is one of the primary building materials when constructing a house in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Not to be confused with Glass gear, which is crafted using Malachite, Glass is a lightweight housebuilding item introduced in the Hearthfire DLC. Elder Scrolls fans will need it for adding expansions to their homestead, such as an Alchemy Laboratory. There are two basic ways to get the Glass building item in The Elder Scrolls V. The first method is finding it within random loot drops in ruins or dungeons. Therefore, the most likely places that Glass will spawn are in demolished houses or cabins throughout Skyrim.

Alternatively, players can purchase Glass from general goods merchants in Skyrim. The first shop that will presumably come to mind for most players is Belethor’s General Goods in Whiterun. However, just because a merchant sells Miscellaneous items doesn’t mean they will readily have Glass up for trade when the player visits them. Therefore, it’s good for the player to know which traders to meet when they require Glass.

Glass-selling merchants can be found in every major city in Skyrim. The likelihood that they will sell one or more will be randomized, but Elder Scrolls fans can fast travel to another Hold if the shops within a town don’t provide the amount of Glass they need.

How to Obtain & Use Glass in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Here is a list of the most reliable shopkeepers in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim who sell Glass. Note that the listed stores generally operate between 8:00 – 20:00 in in-game time.

• Riverwood Trader – located in Riverwood
• The Pawned Prawn – located in Riften
• Arnleif and Sons Trading Company – situated in Markarth
• Windhelm Marketplace – located in Windhelm
• Sadri’s Used Wares – found in Windhelm
• Bits and Pieces – located in Solitude
• Gray Pine Goods – located in Falkreath
• Raven Rock Marketplace – located in Solstheim
• Khajiit Caravans – travel between Skyrim‘s Holds but can be often found camped in front of any major city.

On the other hand, if Elder Scrolls fans feel that they can’t be bothered with searching the lands for Glass, they can use console commands in Skyrim to spawn the building material they need. The item ID for Glass in Skyrim on PC is “03005A69.” To spawn 10x Glass into the player’s inventory, use the following command: “player.AddItem 03005A69 10.” The player can also type in “player.PlaceAtMe 03005A69″ to spawn Glass directly in front of their character.

Once the player has acquired Glass, they can continue expanding their homestead. Players will need Glass to build the following recipes.

• Alchemy Laboratory: requires Glass x 3
• Enchanter’s Tower: requires Glass x 3
• Display Case: requires Glass x 1 (for every Display Case)
