Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #17

In the latest issue of Doctor Aphra, Crimson Dawn may attempt to resurrect Darth Maul (again). While Maul has already been killed seemingly for good by Obi-Wan Kenobi at this point in the Star Wars timeline, this new issue suggests that the crime syndicate he created may be seeking the means to bring him back once more. Interestingly enough, this would be done via a rival archaeologist who crosses paths with Doctor Aphra and Sana Starrros in this new issue from Marvel Comics.

In previous issues of Doctor Aphra from writer Alyssa Wong and artist Minkyu Jung, Aphra and Sana have been looking into powerful relics that have been resurfacing, belonging to an accident cult known as the Ascendant. Despite not being Force-sensitives, the Ascendant was obsessed with the dark side, creating artifacts and devices that would allow them to mimic Force abilities and weapons such as the Thought Dowser and the Whip of Sorrows. As a result, one of Aphra’s rivals named Kho Phon Farrus has made it their crusade to locate these relics while also attempting their dark rituals (including one involving several severed arms).

Now, Doctor Aphra #17 reveals that Farrus is about to uncover a major discovery involving the Ascendant, and it may lead to overcoming death itself, according to the dark archaeologist. Combined with the reveal at the issue’s end that Farrus pledged their findings to none other than Crimson Dawn, it’s possible that the Dawn could be looking to bring back Darth Maul. As such, Crimson Dawn’s Archivist seems incredibly keen to have this new relic called the Spark Eternal, referring to it as the legacy of the Ascendant itself.

While the idea of Crimson Dawn wanting to bring back Maul is just a theory, it’s worth noting that it would probably be a failed attempt. The Ascendant has already been described as a cult seeking to “replicate” the powers of the Sith, not being Sith themselves. As such, the Spark Eternal might not be all that it’s cracked up to be, not being as powerful as Farrus or the Archivist believe it to be.

In any case, bringing back Maul yet again at this point in the Star Wars timeline would certainly feel gratuitous, especially after he was revealed to have survived his fall in Phantom Menace to live on during the Clone Wars until his ultimate death fighting Kenobi before A New Hope. However, a new attempt that ultimately doesn’t succeed feels like more of a possibility considering the fact that Darth Maul‘s legacy lives on through Crimson Dawn. Time will tell as Doctor Aphra continues from Marvel Comics.
