Following three seasons of wild adventures, crazy fun, and many laughs, Netflix is slated to release its fourth season of the hit animated comedy, Disenchantment, on February 9, 2022. Disenchantment comes from the genius mind of Matt Groening, creator of Futurama and The Simpsons, and follows the story of young Princess Bean and her strange entourage with an elf and demon in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland.

Disenchantment features a wide variety of characters and has everything from a talking pig to the mole-like Seal Team Six. The story and script provide a solid base to the show, but the characters are what make it so enjoyable to watch. Some are funnier or stronger than others, but these are the ones that rank the highest.

Queen Dagmar

The central antagonist of Disenchantment is none other than Bean’s mother, Queen Dagmar. Queen Dagmar is voiced by Sharon Horgan from the 2018 hit mystery film, Game Night. This queen begins the series in stone but is brought back to life in episode 9, “To Thine Own Elf Be True.”

While she may seem innocent at first, Queen Dagmar is one intelligent and deceitful woman. In the season one finale, she lies to multiple people, almost kills the king, and imprisons nearly all of Dreamland in stone. In the following seasons, she continues to manipulate people including Bean. All she wants is power. Queen Dagmar is a strong, independent woman but her intentions are misguided.

Mora

This mermaid only needed two episodes to make the list. Mora, voiced by Meredith Hagner, who plays the likable Portia on HBO’s Search Party, is a mermaid that makes her first appearance in season 3, episode 5, titled “Freak Out!” She is imprisoned in Steamland with Elfo but is rescued by Bean. Bean and Elfo try leaving Steamland, but it takes Mora to get out away from Alva and his evil inventions.

Mora and Bean share an undeniable chemistry. She gets Bean to be her true self. They share the princess life and one final night that ends in music and them becoming the first LGBTQIA couple to be introduced in Disenchantment. Mora’s kindness and love for Bean triumph over the evil of Queen Mora, even if it is brief.

Stan The Executioner

Stan The Executioner is the kind-hearted, caring executioner medieval kingdoms never had. He is a hero for Bean when he saves her from boredom by letting her apprentice under him and again saves her from being executed after she was convicted of trying to kill her father.

Noel Fielding from the hilarious British sitcom, The IT Crowd, voices the lovable executioner. His unique British voice adds sincerity to a large man with a deadly profession. The amount of love and effort Stan puts into his work and towards Bean and the kingdom goes largely unrecognized by others. However, he is one of the best characters Disenchantment has with his caring personality.

Prince Merkimer

Yes, this prince is a talking pig. Prince Merkimer began the show as a dashing young suitor and prince that was intended to marry Princess Bean following his older brother’s shocking impalement at the altar. Unfortunately for Merkimer, he turns into a pig in episode 2, “For Whom The Pig Oinks.”

Merkimer is voiced by Matt Berry, who plays the funny and quotable Laszlo in What We Do In The Shadows. Berry’s knack for playing ridiculous and funny characters shines through in Merkimer, who isn’t the main character, but occasionally drops a line or two in the most unpredictable of times, bringing viewers to tears. People can’t help but love how Merkimer can find happiness in the smallest and trivial things.

Queen Oona

“Yes, the evil stepmother trope is very problematic.” This line that breaks the fourth wall by Queen Oona is exactly why she is one of the best characters. She is voiced by the incredibly talented voice actress Tress MacNeille from The Simpsons. Queen Oona is the crazy reptilian ex-pirate captain, ex-wife of King Zog, stepmother of Bean, and mother of Prince Derek.

This queen also does what she wants when she wants. Unlike Queen Dagmar, Oona is supportive of her children and is not as cold-hearted, despite being cold-blooded. She guides her children rather than controls them, as seen in the season 3 episode, “Bad Moon Rising.”

Prince Derek

Coming just ahead of his mother is Prince Derek. Blood is not the only thing Derek shares with his mother, as he too is voiced by Tress MacNeille. This young prince is the younger stepbrother of Bean and plays the identical role of an awkward, hilarious boy similar to that of Gene in Bob’s Burgers. Derek also delivers some strange and funny quotes, just like Gene Belcher.

But what makes Derek a unique and incredible character in Disenchantment is his quirkiness. Audiences can’t help but appreciate how hard Derek tries to connect with others. He typically strikes out, but he tries, and that is what matters and makes him such a fantastic character.

King Zog

Every kingdom has its king and for Dreamland it’s King Zog. Zog, voiced by John DiMaggio, who voiced Bender in Futurama, a character with many great quotes, is the father of Bean and Derek. He is not the king he once was — he’s skinnier and soberer — but he is the king viewers love.

At the beginning of the series, Zog tries to marry off Bean to any eligible bachelor prince. Over time, though, he connects with Bean by spending time with her and listening. Zog still is a bit egocentric and thinks it’s his way or the highway most times, but he has matured into a slightly better ruler and a remarkably better father.

Bean

While Princess Bean is not the best character in Disenchantment, she is undoubtedly the best human character. Bean is voiced by the incredibly funny Abbi Jacobson, known for playing the intelligent Abbi Abrams in Broad City. Jacobson brings Bean to life with her solid delivery of oftentimes sarcastic and humorous lines.

Bean is the central character of this series and is trying to learn who she is. She is a princess but is in no way typical. She likes spending time with her friends Luci and Elfo, drinking ales, and just having good times. She tries to be the ideal princess for her father, but Bean is going to be Bean and that’s what people love about her.

Luci

The race for the two best characters on Disenchantment is a close one, but the demon known as Luci comes in second. Luci is a demon from hell that has come up to help Bean. He is voiced by comedian, actor, and talk show host Eric André of the popular Adult Swim show, The Eric Andre Show.

As Luci puts in the first episode, he is “the guy that makes you feel good about doing bad things.” Each episode usually involves him, Bean, and or Elfo getting into trouble. However, with each problem, Luci finds a way to escape and a bright side. Ironically, he’s a demon that provides hope and optimism. Luci masks his love for his friends but deep down he cares almost more than anyone else.

Elfo

No character is better than this magical elf. Elfo is voiced by actor Nat Faxon, who will appear in the upcoming HBO Max comedy original series, Our Flag Means Death. He is Bean’s best friend and most trusted ally and the friend everyone wants and needs in life.

Elfo is the most well-rounded character on Disenchantment, as he shows a wide range of emotions and can do almost anything. He can even survive being roasted alive by two murderous siblings. What makes him the best, though, is that he is scared of nobody and is proud of who he is. Every character is still hiding behind some curtain, but not Elfo, and this is why fans love him best.
