Ever since premiering at the end of January, the Korean Netflix original series All of Us Are Dead instantly shot to the top of the charts. Set amid a rabid zombie outbreak in an unprepared high school, the riveting series boasts a serious tone to go with ultra-violent carnage that starkly opposes some of the lighter and more comedic zombie TV shows out there. Be warned, iZombie and Santa Clarita Diet this is not!

Rather, All Of Us Are Dead joins a long line of harrowing international zombie television that treats the subject matter with the utmost gravity while still making salient observations about humanity as a whole. Hardcore horror fans proceed with caution.

Kingdom – Stream On Netflix

Despite being set in a much different historical epoch, the terrifying Korean sensibilities of the stellar zombie TV show Kingdom reflect quite well on All of UsAre Dead. With stunning cinematic production values to go with, Kingdom fuses the palace intrigue of the Joseon period with vicious zombie onslaughts as a viral contagion spreads through the royal court.

With a deliberate focus on visceral action and immersive fantasy, both shows do a great job of capturing Korean culture at wildly different points in history while underscoring the universal humanity of each time period.

The Walking Dead – Stream On Netflix

It’s difficult to compile any litany of top-tier zombie TV shows and omit the trend-setting and trailblazing The Walking Dead, AMC’s flagship program that has produced a pair of equally worth spinoffs. In addition to the awesome make-up FX work, it’s the soapy drama that keeps fans coming back to see what happens to the characters.

Set to finally conclude in 2022, The Walking Dead is the definitive zombie TV show that is broad enough to appeal to both casual and hardened horror fans alike. Without its massive success and resurgence of the zombie TV takeover, shows like All of Us Are Dead would cease to be.

Z Nation – Stream On Netflix

A real argument can be made that Z Nation is a better show than The Walking Dead, with the indefatigable zombie action taking precedent over the slow melodrama. This quality also applies to All of Us Are Dead, where the relentless carnage keeps fans on the edge of their seats with nary a boring moment.

Despite the lower production values, Z Nation has a charming collection of characters that are extremely easy to root for and follow all the way across the country as they search for refuge during a nightmarish zombie apocalypse. Moreover, a real parallel can be made between Cheong-san’s role in All of Us Are Dead and 10k’s role in Z-Nation, two extremely brave young characters who sacrifice everything to save their friends.

Black Summer – Stream On Netflix

Once finished with Z Nation, it’s time to spend time surviving Black Summer, SyFy’s underrated zombie spinoff show picked up by Netflix. The story is set in the early days of the zombie apocalypse, where a single mother (Jaime King) searches desperately for her missing daughter.

Whereas Z Nation takes a slightly campier approach, Black Summer boasts the kind of serious tone and dramatic stakes presented in All of Us Are Dead, emphasizing the importance of family in the process.

Sweet Home – Stream On Netflix

While the killer creatures in Sweet Home extend beyond viral zombies and deadly grave-risers, the excellent Korean horror-fantasy series is an absolute must-watch. Upon losing his family in an unspeakable tragedy, young Hyun (Song Kang) rises up and summons the strength to quell a monstrous onslaught in his hometown.

In addition to adhering to the same gravid tone, tenor, and temperament as All of Us Are Dead, Sweet Home rises above the rest through its stunning production design, well-rounded characters, and truly captivating underdog story that everyone can relate to.

The Uncanny Counter – Stream On Netflix

If one swapped out zombies for demons, All of Us Are Dead would very much resemble The Uncanny Counter, a superb Korean horror-fantasy drama every fan of the former ought to check out. The underrated horror TV show follows a trio of friends known as The Counters who work in a noodle bar by day and moonlight as amateur demon slayers by night.

Demographically, the young characters in both shows deliberately appeal to Korea’s youth, paving the way for a highly amusing yet hyper-violent affair. Moreover, just like All of Us Are Dead, each episode is more than 60 minutes long and feels like self-contained mini-movies.

Hellbound – Stream On Netflix

Cinematically speaking, All of Us Are Dead most closely resembles the terrific 2016 movie Train to Busan, directed by Sang-Ho Yeon. Yeon also directed the excellent new Netflix original horror series Hellbound, in which monstrous otherworldly beasts suddenly appear and threaten humanity.

Yeon brings many of his directorial trademarks to Hellbound, including prioritizing a strong protagonist over cheap thrills. When the show really gets going by mid-season, the gruesome religious terror becomes a quintessential Korean horrorshow chock full of unsettling plot twists.

Betaal – Stream On Netflix

For another outstanding international zombie TV show that explores a different culture and mythological lore, tune into Netflix’s original Indian series Betaal. The story takes place in a remote, war-torn Indian village where a soldier and his zombified troops must take on a human battalion.

What makes the premise so interesting is that it focuses on a zombified protagonist and turns human beings into the bad guys. Viscerally speaking, the show boasts some of the grisliest and most unnerving zombie makeup and FX of any recent horror show.

Daybreak – Stream On Netflix

The most glaring American counterpart to All of Us Are Dead has to be Daybreak, the wildly amusing 2019 action-adventure series that also sees a high school being overrun by a deadly supernatural scourge. The show follows Josh (Colin Ford), a teenage pariah that becomes an unlikely hero who leads his friends against a series of post-apocalyptic threats.

What the show does so well, aside from the jaw-dropping carnage, is shrewdly tapping into the existential angst Josh feels while the end of the world looms. What’s more, the meaningful teenage friendships in the show are what help viewers persist through the mortifying violence.

Squid Game – Stream On Netflix

When it comes to the most recommendable Korean TV shows, nothing eclipses the global phenomena known as Squid Game. Indeed, the biggest series in Netflix history deliberately explores the history of childhood Korean games and turns them into a riveting gameshow of life or death.

Truth is, fans of All of Us Are Dead have probably already seen Squid Game. If not, it’s the number one destination. In order to evade the zombie outbreak, the characters in the former often use ingenious games and escape-room tactics to survive in ways similar to those in Squid Game. Both shows manage to provide exhilarating fun and petrifying scares in equal measure.
