The Forever Purge Officially Rated R For Strong/Bloody Violence

The Forever Purge, the fifth installment in the Purge franchise, has officially been rated R for strong/bloody violence. The series began in 2013 and operated on the idea that, once a year, America holds a Purge Night where any and all crime is allowed to take place for a 12-hour period. The movie spawned four movie sequels and a short-lived television series. 

The Forever Purge has finally received its R rating. This rating is said to be for “strong/bloody violence and language throughout,” as ComicBook reports. The upcoming movie’s rating now falls in line with the previous four Purge movies, as all of those received an R rating for the same reason.

After The Purge premiered in 2013, Blumhouse took advantage of its popularity. To “purge” has become synonymous with the chaotic lawlessness that can come with the government-mandated holiday. As the story has progressed on both the big screen and small, the once far-fetched concept has now evolved into an overarching idea that feels just a bit too connected, frighteningly so, to the political and cultural events that have transpired in the real world in recent years.

Perhaps the nature of the subject matter explored in The First Purge and its predecessors have led Blumhouse to finally pull the plug on the movies. However, there is still some doubt that this is truly the end for the franchise, especially given the statement from actor, Frank Grillo, who starred in two of the entries, that a sixth installment may be in the works.

It is quite possible there could be further room for the series to expand, considering how the series has evolved from the simple home invasion story explored in the first film. The thoughtful focus on Latinx characters and its attention to cultural diversity amid bigger issues of class warfare continue to resonate. Whether this is it, or there’s more up Blumhouse’s sleeves, only time will tell. One thing’s for certain, though: After being hunkered down in quarantine for over a year, audiences will be itching to purge once more when The Forever Purge hits theaters this summer.
