Warning! SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 6.

The Book of Boba Fett season 1, episode 6, “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” saw Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, reunite with Ahsoka Tano; however, the episode missed this opportunity for Din to learn more about the Darksaber from Ahsoka, who had previous experience with it. In The Book of Boba Fett episode 6, Din went to visit Grogu while he was training with Luke Skywalker. However, Din was surprised to meet Ahsoka Tano there. Ultimately, Din did not talk with Grogu or Luke, instead discussing Grogu’s progress with Ahsoka. Din also failed to mention to Ahsoka that he had the Darksaber.

The Darksaber is an ancient, black-bladed lightsaber, built by the first Mandalorian to become a Jedi, Tarre Vizsla. After Tarre’s death, the Jedi kept the Darksaber in the Jedi Temple for years until the Vizsla clan stole it back. Since then, the Darksaber became a symbol of power among the Mandalorians. According to their culture, if someone wins the Darksaber in combat, he or she has the right to rule Mandalore. Originally introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Darksaber changed owners many times before Din accidentally won it from Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, not realizing its significance.

In The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, Din struggled to wield the Darksaber, even after the Armorer trained with him and taught him more about the blade’s history. Due to this, Din’s reunion with Ahsoka would have been the perfect opportunity for Din to continue developing his knowledge of and skill with the Darksaber. Although Din’s goal was to visit Grogu, the Darksaber still should have been brought up during his conversation with Ahsoka. This could have happened in many ways, such as Ahsoka sensing the Darksaber nearby, Ahsoka simply noticing that Din had it, or Din asking Ahsoka about the saber since it was originally a Jedi weapon. The Book of Boba Fett did not include any of these options though, preventing Din from benefitting from Ahsoka’s experience with past Darksaber wielders and Jedi training.

In The Book of Boba Fett, Din only knows about three of the Darksaber’s earlier owners: Tarre Vizsla, Moff Gideon, and Bo-Katan Kryze. In contrast, Ahsoka has had firsthand experience with several other previous wielders of the Darksaber. During Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka fought Pre Vizla, the leader of a Mandalorian terrorist organization called Death Watch, while he had the Darksaber. Years later in Star Wars Rebels, a Mandalorian rebel named Sabin Wren briefly owned the Darksaber. Ahsoka and Sabine were friends who began the search for their missing friend and fellow rebel, Padawan Ezra Bridger, together. Due to this, Ahsoka understands the importance of the Darksaber to Mandalore and has seen how its wielders can use the saber for good or bad. This is important for Din because he has primarily seen the Darksaber used for evil or heard of it causing destruction. Ahsoka’s experience and wisdom could help Din avoid repeating the Darksaber’s past owners’ mistakes.

Din also would have benefitted from discussing the Darksaber with Ahsoka because she would be an ideal teacher to train him. In Star Wars Rebels, Sabine was a skilled Mandalorian warrior who had even briefly trained at the Imperial Academy of Mandalore before defecting, but she struggled to use the Darksaber as well. Sabine had to study to fight with the saber under Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi Knight and leader in the Rebellion’s Phoenix Cell. Similarly, Din could benefit from training with someone with experience using a lightsaber, such as Ahsoka. While Din did not know that Ahsoka had any prior experience with the Darksaber, the subject still could have easily come up during their reunion, making The Book of Boba Fett episode 6 a missed opportunity for Din to learn more about the Darksaber.
