Director Taika Waititi doesn’t know if Thor 5 will ever happen. After boarding the MCU through Thor: Ragnarok, the filmmaker has quickly become a fan-favorite in the franchise. So much so that he’s brought back to helm Thor: Love & Thunder — the fourth solo film for a Marvel hero.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, there was a significant delay to the production of Thor: Love and Thunder. Filming took place in Australia, where Thor: Ragnarok shot. Eventually, they’re able to wrap up principal photography, with both Waititi and star Chris Hemsworth sharing an image of Korg and Thor on-set to commemorate their successful work. Plot details remain uncertain at this point, but it’s been confirmed that it will tackle Jane Foster becoming Mighty Thor, while Gorr the God Butcher will be the primary villain of the narrative. Set images have also revealed another Asgardian play, as well as, the revelation that The God of Thunder’s goats will be introduced.

On the heels of Thor: Love & Thunder‘s filming end, Waititi told The Sydney Morning Herald that he’s unsure if Thor 5 is in the MCU cards. Because of that, they’ve included all of the ideas they thought of for the God of Thunder and his franchise.

“Who knows if we do another one after this but I definitely feel like we put everything – every idea and every single ridiculous concept or gag or stunt or character – into this film. I couldn’t be happier with it.”

Taking place after the events of Avengers: Endgame,Thor: Love and Thunder will see the God of Thunder in a new adventure. Set images have revealed him continuously hanging out with some members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, which means that they’ve maintained their relationship at the end of the Infinity Saga. Interestingly, while there’s confirmation about what to expect from Jane’s return, there’s very little known about the God of Thunder’s personal arc in the movie. It’s worth noting, however, that it’s been inadvertently confirmed that the Asgardian royalty has lost the weight he gained in the five years following his catastrophic failure to stop Thanos.

So does this mean that Waititi’s latest MCU endeavor effectively wraps up Hemsworth’s Thor solo arc? It’s currently unsure. Despite being the fourth entry in the Avenger’s own sub-franchise, the upcoming blockbuster is essentially the sequel to Ragnarok. Given Marvel Studios’ struggle to find the right approach to the God of Thunder in his early years, chances are that they’d be willing to move the hero’s narrative beyond his new movie. If anything, the response to Thor: Love and Thunder will be the biggest determining factor whether or not Thor 5 will come to fruition.
