A ghostly pirate captain is barging into Torchlight 3 as part of today’s Spring update. Taking place a century after Torchlight 2, the third game in the series lets players choose from unlikely character classes and loot their way to victory across the land of Novastraia. The hack ‘n slash sequel from Perfect World Entertainment and Echtra Games is available across PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Torchlight 3 is also a current part of Xbox Game Pass.

One thing worth noting about Torchlight 3 is that it’s the first game in the series not created by the series creators at Runic Games. That developer ended up shuttering in 2017 following the release of Hob, an action-oriented venture away from the team’s ARPG roots. New developer Echtra Games does bring in many of the minds that created the original Torchlight games, but their efforts were met with a middling reception when the game fully released late in 2020.

Hopefully, today’s Spring update can improve Torchlight 3 for all. The main attraction is the new Cursed Captain class, a ghostly mid-range pirate class that bowls over enemies with cannonballs and a crew of summoned spirits. The Captain also collects doubloons during combat in order to fuel his skills and can loot capes, a new class of armor that improves his stats. The Cursed Captain can upgrade along either a Cursed or Piracy skill tree, with players getting the choice between more potent ghostly familiars or more explosive powder kegs.

Outside of the new class, the Spring update brings several more changes to Torchlight 3. There are updates to the pet system, including a new “Fur and Fashion” contract, additional pet slots, and new species of companions. Players can now choose from forty new variants, inviting everything from a Stag to a Shiba Inu to accompany them on their adventures. There are also general UI improvements and new fort items to be used in the game’s laboratory.

Torchlight 3 is one of the many games available on Xbox Game Pass, allowing curious onlookers who happen to be subscribers a chance to peek whenever the game gets a huge update and try out what’s new. Considering that one of the biggest hits on Game Pass is Sea of Thieves, it stands to reason that those who enjoy sailing Rare’s high seas may want to pop in on a new genre and test their pirating abilities in a whole new way.

However players get to the game, it’s good to see that the team behind Torchlight 3 is still hard at work on new updates and features for its most dedicated fans. There are plenty of games with long roadmaps of post-launch support that end up stalling out at the starting line due to poor critical reception. This easily could have been the fate of Torchlight 3, especially since the game spawned out of failed plans for an MMO take on the series. The developers at Echtra Games are continuing to improve the game instead, hoping to convince many in the long run to look past initial impressions and give the title a shot.

Torchlight 3 is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
