A new set photo for Transformers 7, subtitled Rise of the Beasts, seemingly reveals the Porsche car form of iconic Autobot Mirage. The latest installment in the live-action film franchise of Hasbro’s iconic toy line will take primary influence from the Beast Wars storyline and will be set in 1994 as two humans from Brooklyn partner with Optimus Prime and the Autobots in the midst of an ancient conflict between the three factions of Transformers. Creed II helmer Steven Caple Jr. is helming the film on a script from Army of the Dead co-writer Joby Harold and future Scream writer James Vanderbilt.

The cast for Transformers 7 will include Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback and Lauren Vélez as the humans at the heart of the story as well as the return of Peter Cullen as voice of Optimus and Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal. Rise of the Beasts was one of a number of projects announced to be in development at Paramount Pictures alongside a potential Bumblebee sequel, animated prequel and live-action film from Angel Manuel Soto, which is unknown where it sits in the franchise timeline. With the cast and crew assembled and production underway on the seventh Transformers film, new tidbits are being slowly revealed about the project.

With just over a month into production on the film, new set photos from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts have been unveiled (via TFsource). Including a look at the metropolis setting of the story, the photos also point towards the first look at Mirage’s car form as a silver and blue Porsche 964 RS. Check out the set photos below:

While the confirmation of Mirage’s appearance in the film was an intriguing element for fans, the change in the car form of the Autobot is sure to come as an even bigger surprise. In the source toyline and cartoon, Mirage hid as a 1979 F-1 Ligier JS11 Formula-1 racer, while Paramount’s Dark of the Moon saw him take on a red 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia and an alternate name of Dino. Though this could be chalked up to a simple vehicle licensing issue for toys, both licenses are generally sold separately to studios/manufacturers, making the decision to change the appearance from an F-1 racer to a Porsche likely due to both a city and 1990s setting.

Whatever the case may be, the return of Mirage for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is an interesting one. With his fate left up in the air after the events of Dark of the Moon and his personality generally being untrusting of the Autobot cause, it would be interesting to see this further explored in the new film, especially with a promise of the return of more G1 Transformers designs, it could even open the door for Frank Welker to return to voice the character. Only time will tell when the film arrives in theaters next June.
