Sophia Ali, who plays Chloe in Sony’s Uncharted, learned she wasn’t very good at the video games while researching her role. With a filmography stretching back to 2003, Ali has previously appeared in the 2008 horror film Truth or Dare, and as Dr. Dahlia Qadri on Grey’s Anatomy. Now, Ali stars in Venom and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer’s Uncharted, which was released in theaters on February 18.

Uncharted is based on Naughty Dog’s video game franchise of the same name, which began with the release of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on PlayStation 3 in 2007. Serving as a spiritual prequel to the games, the film sees Tom Holland play a younger version of the wise-cracking thief turned treasure hunter, Nathan Drake, who meets his future mentor in Mark Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan. In addition to that pair, Uncharted also stars Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, and Ali. The latter actress plays the live-action Chloe Frazer, a fellow treasure hunter and occasional soldier of fortune who first appeared in 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves before headlining her own game via 2017’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Ali talked about how she and the rest of the cast played all of the Uncharted games during filming. She also revealed it took her quite a while to finish the main four, (presumably) because she wasn’t very good. The actor explained she played the games “as fast as [she] could.” Read Ali’s full quote below:

“I mean, I played the games, like as fast as I could, for hours. [Ruben Fleisher and Tom Holland] played all of them. So it like took me forever, and I wasn’t good … Then COVID happened, so then we had a break, and that was when I really played it, then we got to set, and like everyone had played it at that point. So, then we all had our own ideas and stuff, but it was really cool. And we went scene by scene, like, ‘How can we make this more like the games?'”

Uncharted’s release date was delayed multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it appears that those delays resulted in more references to the games making their way into the film. Despite following younger versions of the characters, the film incorporates aspects of the entire Uncharted franchise, including the cargo plane sequence from Uncharted 3: Drake Deception and Sam’s backstory in Uncharted 4. When players meet Chloe in the second Uncharted game, it’s revealed that she was once a love interest of Nathan. Thanks to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Chloe’s increasing popularity, the Uncharted film adaptation decided to explore her budding love/hate relationship with Nathan.

It’s not a stretch to say that Ali’s Chloe feels the most like her video game counterpart in Uncharted. However, it’s worth mentioning that Nathan’s main love interest and eventual wife is reporter Elena Fisher, who is not in the Uncharted film but would likely be introduced in a sequel, which hinges on the success of this first film. While reviews for the project have been mixed, Uncharted outperformed Sony’s opening weekend projections with $44.2 million, making it the highest opening for a video game movie since 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog. If the movie continues on this trajectory, perhaps audiences will witness a love triangle reminiscent of Uncharted 2 and, someday, see Ali star as the lead in a spinoff.
