A new listing on the ESRB website suggests that the Complete Edition of Watch Dogs will be heading to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at some point in the likely near future. The original Watch Dogs was a launch title for the soon to be last-gen machines, raising expectations thanks to trailers that showcased amazing graphical prowess. Unfortunately, much of those graphics were not possible on the game’s target hardware, with some of the effects only really becoming feasible in recent times. That letdown, plus what was perceived as a substandard protagonist, made players write off the game as a failed experiment by publisher Ubisoft.

The franchise only really became something worth anticipating with the release of Watch Dogs 2, a game that toned down the franchise’s serious nature and ramped up the charm with an over the top cast of characters. There were still moments where the cutting edge satire of technology leaned too close for comfort in the eyes of some players and critics, but the diverse cast and additions to the gameplay found an audience that eluded the first game upon its initial release. Releasing that game onto new consoles could let players interested in diving in further after finishing up the newly released Watch Dogs Legion.

The ESRB listing for Watch Dogs Complete Edition was already in existence before this week, as the game exists on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as a game of the year-style compilation. However, a quiet update added Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 to the list of consoles its rated for, as well as Google’s Stadia. This would all match up with platforms that are also receiving the more expensive editions of Watch Dogs: Legion, which come with the Complete Edition of the franchise’s start point mostly as a teaser for its also-included expansions, one of which stars Aiden Pearce.

The planned Bloodline story expansion for Watch Dogs Legion will bring back original Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pearce alongside masked Watch Dogs 2 deuteragonist Wrench. Both characters will arrive in London alongside two new characters named Mina and Darcy. The latter of those two is a direct crossover with the Assassin’s Creed franchise, with the character being a member of the series’ titular Assassin’s Order. The character is said to not be in canon with the ongoing Assassin’s Creed narrative, but instead a bit of cross-franchise fan service for those who are veterans of Ubisoft’s many open worlds. That DLC, along with the gratis copy of Watch Dogs Complete Edition, will come to Season Pass holders sometime next year.

It’s unclear at this time whether Watch Dogs Complete Edition will be sold separately from the season pass or if it will only be available to premium Watch Dogs Legion customers. If it’s the latter, that’s a real missed opportunity, especially if those who already own the current-gen edition of the game. It would be nice to see publishers extend the next-gen compatibility to games beyond those released in the launch window, as there are plenty of previous-gen games that could look amazing with just a few tweaks and an uncapped frame rate.
