Screen Rant has an exclusive clip from Snowpiercer season 3, episode 8, where Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) learns that Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) may still be alive aboard her own train. In the previous episode of Snowpiercer, Layton recovered from a coma after his fight-to-the-death with the traitorous Pike (Steven Ogg). Delving deep into his subconscious, Layton awoke to realize that his “vision” of New Eden was just a photo of a tree he saw on a calendar and that he made the idea of the promised land up. Meanwhile, Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) showed Alex Cavill (Rowan Blanchard) the results of his investigation that her mother Melanie may still be alive.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Melanie has been presumed dead ever since Wilford abandoned her at the end of Snowpiercer season 2. However, Cavill hasn’t been far from Snowpiercer’s main characters’ minds. Jennifer Connelly returned to play two different fantasy versions of her character when both Alex and Wilford manifested their own imaginary versions of Melanie in Snowpiercer season 3, episode 4, “Bound By One Track.” But after Layton stole Snowpiercer’s engine and created a pirate train to find Melanie and New Eden, Wilford detected a track switch outside Marseille, France three months later. However, Layton’s pirate train was nowhere near France at the time, and Wilford deduced it must somehow be Melanie. If the billionaire engineer’s theory is correct, then Cavill must have miraculously found her own train and began following Snowpiercer.

In Screen Rant‘s exclusive clip, Alex and Bennett Knox (Iddo Goldberg) explain Wilford’s Melanie theory to Layton, Ruth Wardell (Allison Wright), and Bess Till (Mickey Sumner). The two engineers offer crucial details about how Melanie could have possibly survived for the last six months and how she may have acquired her own train. You can watch the clip here:

The fact that Jennifer Connelly remains part of Snowpiercer‘s season 3 cast, despite Melanie’s presumed death, was an open secret. After all, Melanie was always part of Snowpiercer season 3’s promotional materials. Of course, Melanie Cavill is arguably Snowpiercer‘s most intelligent and resourceful character. She also knows Wilford Industries’ resources so Ben and Alex’s explanation that Melanie could have reached a Wilford supply hangar in the Rocky Mountains and acquired some kind of maintenance vehicle to chase after the 1,029-cars-long super train is plausible.

Naturally, Alex fears that even if they find whatever train Melanie is aboard, her mother might still be dead since she has had no food or supplies for six months. All of the world’s remaining resources are on Snowpiercer so Melanie’s odds of survival are slim. Still, it’s hard to believe that if Snowpiercer does locate Melanie, it would all be for naught if she’s already dead by the time they reach her. Melanie is Snowpiercer‘s ultimate survivor and it’s worth hoping that Cavill does return to the train after her long absence. As for what condition Melanie will be in if Snowpiercer finds her, and the elephant in the room of why Wilford would want his nemesis back aboard after he tried to kill her, these are questions Snowpiercerwill hopefully answer in the final episodes of season 3.

Snowpiercer airs Mondays @ 9pm on TNT.
