Resident Evil Village‘s latest gameplay trailer gives new insights into the way players will fight RE8‘s enemies. Combat in Resident Evil Village seems to mirror its first-person predecessor, Resident Evil 7, for the most part. Players will be able to use a number of weapons to survive the horrors of the village and castle, and the ability to guard enemy attacks also makes a return.

The new gameplay footage of Resident Evil Village is being shown from a PS4 Pro and looks quite good. The trailer begins with the game’s protagonist, Ethan Winters, wielding a knife as he makes his way into the depths of what appears to be Castle Dimitrescu, previously featured in the Maiden demo.  The knife allows for a forward thrusting attack as well as diagonal slashing attacks. Players are also able to use their knife to break open wooden crates, revealing potential resources for crafting and surviving.

Next, Ethan equips a pistol and a white reticle appears onscreen,  which can focus to a smaller window as the weapon raises and zooms in. Gathering as many resources as possible has always been an important aspect of survival in Resident Evil games, and that appears to still be the case. Resident Evil Village’s inventory system has seen some changes from RE7, however, now being more reminiscent of Resident Evil 4’s fan-favorite inventory management system.

What To Expect From Resident Evil Village’s Gameplay

From the trailer, it’s uncertain whether or not there is a clear indicator of damage done, aside from blood splatters, though headshots seem to cause staggering. Weapon rotation will be important to maximize damage and save ammo. Weapons can be fixed to a shortcut via the directional pad and can be swapped with haste. The trailer also features guarding as a method of reducing damage done to the player. In Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, players had the ability to completely block damage or even launch a counter-attack if timed correctly. It’s possible this ability could make an appearance again in Resident Evil Village. In the world premier trailer that released earlier this year, it was mentioned that Resident Evil Village has a number of unique enemies – all which will have their own distinctive fighting style, keeping players alert in the midst of fighting.

Currently players can explore part of Resident Evil Village‘s world through the Maiden demo on the PlayStation 5. Though no combat is featured in that demo, it’s still a taste of what’s to come when the full game launches.
